Weatherizing your private home to economize

EAST PEORIA (WEEK) – With cold temperatures in the area, there may be a cost to staying warm and roasted in your home.

Energy costs go up pretty quickly in this weather. However, there are ways to save money on your monthly bill while being comfortable in your own home.

Nicholas Crowder, Ameren Illinois Energy Efficiency Consultant, has some helpful tips and tricks on weathering your home to keep the cold and heat out.

“Use some of the different techniques or methods to seal cracks and leaks on windows. Placing plastic wrap completely over the window can help keep the breeze from getting through,” Crowder said.

Crowder also recommends replacing the stove filter frequently to maintain optimal airflow throughout your home.

“A dirty filter will reduce the amount of air that goes through your system and the amount of warm air that goes through your home. If you have a radiator, you want to make sure that a boiler is turned on regularly.”

Smart thermostats can also save you about 15% on your monthly electricity bill. While most smart thermostats are typically above $ 100, Ameren Illinois tops discounts and rebates to keep costs down.
