Watch GM CEO Mary Barra take her first autonomous automotive trip with Cruise

General Motors Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra speaks during a meeting with private sector CEOs hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden to discuss the Build Back Better agenda at the White House in Washington, United States, January 26, 2022 discuss.

“It’s just surreal” General Motors CEO Mary Barra says while testing one of the company’s driverless cars in San Francisco, calling it a highlight of her career.

Barra last week rode in a retrofitted Chevrolet Bolt EV with Kyle Vogt, founder and interim CEO of Cruise, the automaker’s majority-owned autonomous vehicle subsidiary. The self-driving vehicle, called Tostada, is one of a fleet of driverless cruise vehicles currently cruising around San Francisco at night as the company prepares for the commercialization of the operations this year.

“It was amazing,” Barra says in a video posted to Cruise’s YouTube page. He later added, “This is going to change the way people move in such a positive way… I’m over the moon.”

Vogt stepped in as CEO after Dan Ammann, a former GM executive who ran Cruise allegedly suppressed over internal disagreements with Barra.

Autonomous vehicles are seen as a potential multi-trillion dollar market. GM expects the operations to potentially contribute as much as $50 billion in annual revenue by the end of this decade. However, the commercialization of self-driving vehicles has been far more challenging than many predicted just a few years ago.

The ride was Barra’s first ride in an unmanned vehicle without a safety driver.

Late last year, Cruise began testing a fully driverless vehicle fleet with no human backup drivers. In November, Cruise posted a video of Vogt doing his first driverless drive in San Francisco.

The nearly three-minute video with Barra also shows GM President Mark Reuss and Craig Buchholz, senior vice president of GMs Communications, in another self-driving vehicle called Disco.

Reuss called the drive “amazing” and spoke about the vehicle’s performance and its potential impact on society, including seniors like his 85-year-old father Lloyd Reuss, who was also the automaker’s president in the early ’90s.

GM acquired Cruise in 2016. Since then it has attracted investors such as Honda engineSoftbank Vision Fund and more recently Walmart and Microsoft.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin will launch its New Shepard rocket on Saturday for the sixth time this year, a mission in which the company will launch six passengers simultaneously for the first time.

Named NS-19, this New Shepard mission will bring a crew of two guests and four customers: astronaut Alan Shepard’s daughter, Laura Shepard Churchley, TV presenter and NFL star Michael Strahan, space manager Dylan Taylor, investor Evan Dick, the venture capitalist Lane Bess and his son Cameron Bess.

The company is currently aiming for NS-19 to launch at 9:45 a.m. EST.

The NS-19 crew takes a look at their journey into space. From left: Laura Shepard Churchley, Michael Strahan, Evan Dick, Lane Bess, Cameron Bess and Dylan Taylor.

Blue origin

The NS-19 mission will bring Blue Origin to 14 people launching into space in 2021. The year has seen a spate of private manned space activity, with three US companies taking passengers over the edge of space or into orbit.

The rocket will launch from Blue Origin’s private facility in West Texas and reach over 100,000 kilometers (or more than 340,000 feet in altitude) before safely returning to Earth a few minutes later. From start to finish, the launch is expected to take around 11 minutes. The crew should experience weightlessness for about three minutes.

New Shepard’s capsule will accelerate to more than three times the speed of sound to exceed the 80-kilometer (roughly 50 miles) limit that the U.S. is using to mark the edge of space. The capsule is flown autonomously without a human pilot and returns under a set of parachutes to land in the Texas desert.

The New Shepard rocket booster is reusable and will attempt to return and land on a concrete platform near the launch site.

The company also flies New Shepard for cargo missions, as in Augustcarrying research payloads in the capsule.

Cleveland looking for to award $2M to financially troubled NEON Well being Providers utilizing pandemic aid cash: Stimulus Watch

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland City Council could pass bill Monday to allocate $ 2 million from the city’s pandemic funds to a nonprofit agency that is providing its CEO with more than $ 500,000 despite pre-pandemic financial difficulties pays.

Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services (NEON) are seeking funding from the American Rescue Plan to strengthen their health services in some of Cleveland’s poorest minority neighborhoods.

Proponents argue that the money could go far in supporting major health programs. but Tax returns from NEON reveal a precarious financial situation – and a CEO who received a $ 100,000 raise in a year the agency was caring for fewer patients and was in the red.

NEON’s plan to spend the $ 2 million American Rescue Plan Act will use the lion’s share – $ 1.4 million – on several new and existing programs, including mental health services, lead prevention and intervention, food distribution, Education about healthy eating, chronic disease control and health literacy. However, this funding pool also includes items such as “NEON Administration” and “NEON Direct Costs – Transportation”, with no US dollar amounts specified for any program.

Another $ 360,000 would work with LegalWorks, Inc. to fund a detox clinic, and $ 200,000 would be used to repair damage to the NEON Hough Health Center, which caught fire in May.

The Hough Center is temporarily closed, and NEON’s other centers are bringing health services to other areas where Clevelander suffer disproportionately from negative health outcomes, including Miles-Broadway, Norwood, St. Clair-Superior, and the Southeast Side.

NEON is a state-qualified health center and, according to IRS filings, brings in primarily cash from contributions – about $ 13 million in 2019 – and program services like Medicaid reimbursements totaling about $ 11 million in 2019. Funding is received through the administration for health resources and services. This agency said cleveland.com that NEON receives funding until the end of the year and has been approved for a 3-year funding from 01/01/2022 to 12/31/2024. The agency spokesman was not yet able to announce the total amount of the funding at the time of going to press.

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, NEON Caring for fewer patients each year, down about a third over the past five years – from 31,804 in 2016 to 21,605 in 2020. From 2017 to 2018 – the year that board member granted CEO Willie Austin a $ 100,000 raise – NEON served 2,740 fewer employees.

Although NEON serves fewer Clevelanders, NEON’s tax returns are in deficit in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 – the last available year when net income was nearly $ 1 million in the red.

In 2020, NEON received more than $ 5 million in pandemic-related funding – a $ 3.6 million forgivable loan from the CARES Paycheck Protection Program and $ 1.6 million in additional Health Center Grants and $ 216,000 in Relief Funds.

Cleveland.com contacted NEON and Austin for this story.

Some of NEON’s financial difficulties are related to a payout of more than $ 1.3 million due to a Unlawful termination lawsuit. In this case, employee James O’Donnell was fired after raising concerns about a financial audit involving the questionable activities of Arthur Fayne, a NEON board member and head of the consulting firm hired to lead the New Eastside Market project, showed that the developer was responsible for the NEON.

In December 2020, Fayne has been charged with embezzling $ 855,000 from the Eastside Market project. The case is pending.

NEON was selected to develop the New Eastside Market in 2015 and rented the property on St. Clair Avenue from the city for $ 1 a year. The city has also deposited over $ 350,000 as well a 75 percent tax reduction for 15 years on improvements to the property, including new plumbing, electrical and roofing. When the project went over budget in 2018, the city approved an additional $ 500,000 grant. Cuyahoga County and the State of Ohio also awarded grants of $ 750,000 each.

New Eastside Market opened in 2019 with a vision to operate a full-service grocery store in what is otherwise considered a “food wasteland,” as well as providing health and wellness services. But NEON has yet to deliver on some of his promises for the location, like opening a health clinic or a demonstration kitchen for nutritious cooking classes.

Alderman Basheer Jones, whose ward includes NEON’s Hough Clinic, was the council’s strongest supporter of raising $ 2 million in stimulus funds to NEON. Jones, who has given up his council seat because of an unsuccessful mayoral candidacy, has made the NEON proposal his final legislative proposal.

Speaking at a committee meeting on November 16, Jones said he saw NEON’s latest funding proposal as a step toward holistic health. Jones said when NEON was founded in 1967 it was one of the few health care providers that the city’s black community felt welcome.

“Well, I’m sure there have been a lot of mistakes along the way,” Jones continued. “Unfortunately we live in a country where some make mistakes and others can’t make mistakes… Why can some organizations as a city make mistakes and then get the resources and still be able to make mistakes? Do business and there are some who are excluded? “

The city council is expected to deliberate on the law at its final session of the year on Monday before a new council and mayor take office in January.

Model Watch: Tv persona Sarah Lian lets her outfits do the speaking

Clothing is more than just vanity. Sarah Lian believes it can also work to complement a personality. She also sees fashion as a reflection of society and time.

The 38-year-old Malaysian gives a lot of thought to the choice of her outfits – be it with simple accessories like accessories or more serious things like a sustainable fashion choice.

Born in Taiping, Perak, and raised in Canada, Lian was active in film, television and theater. She is often seen here as a celebrity in the local scene at events (or as a hostess).

Continue reading: Style Watch: Malaysian artist Foo Bihzhu is larger than life when it comes to fashion

As for her aesthetic, she seems to prefer anything that can help her stand out.

From bold yet chic designs to comfy two-piece ensembles to exquisite red carpet dresses, Lian certainly knows how to rock a look. Maybe it’s more about their confidence than anything else.

While Lian likes to keep up with trends, she doesn’t think they define anyone’s style. In her opinion, fashion shouldn’t be a make or break factor in judging a person.

Curating a good OOTD (Outfit of the Day) is in the details, after all, and Lian is more demanding than most when it comes to striking that fine balance between effortless and beautifully polished looks.

What do you think of fashion? How does it affect life in general?

Fashion plays a big role in my life. In addition to studying fashion at university, I believe that it is an extension of your own personality. Fashion has always been a social commentary on society and the world we live in, and to me that sounds true. Since most of us were at home (during the pandemic), clothes like loungewear or fun “home” styles were more noticeable and common. It also showed that there wasn’t much room for pretexts as everyone had nowhere to go, we could all be more authentic. Also with sustainability in the foreground, I try to be a little more conscious when buying clothes. When I buy fast fashion, I make sure that I have pieces that last a long time and, to be honest, my favorite pieces have a long lifespan.

What does a typical Sarah Lian outfit look like?

I would probably describe my personal style as effortless, chic with a touch of boldness. I like to take risks while holding on to simple silhouettes that emphasize the curves on a woman’s body. A textured dress with a neckline or design detail paired with a pair of strappy sandals would likely be a signature Sarah Lian look.

If someone asks you for moderation suggestions, how would you respond?

Convenience is the key. If you are not comfortable in your own skin, everything you wear will look like you are drowning. Also, knowing your body type and finding ways to balance your appearance would be another aspect of dressing well, and if all fails, stick to the basics. Don’t make it too complicated! 4. Do you think everyone can be fashionable?

Continue reading: Style Watch: Singer-songwriter Zee Avi remains colorful Malaysian

I think anyone can be fashionable with the amount of attention and time they spend on fashion. Being up-to-date on the trends and the new collections or the spirit of each season can help you make better, more informed decisions about what you like and what you don’t like. That being said, you can still be fashionable if you stick to the basics, it’s all up to your interpretation.

What are your style essentials?

A pair of comfortable heels, rings or bracelets to add a little more detail to the outfit, and a great lipstick too.

Lukaku and Strikepartner Timo Werner are up to date hurt after tearing up in the blues match against Malmö.

But that temporary blow aside, Lukaku’s first season of record buying is simmering well at Stamford Bridge as they lead Liverpool’s Premier League by one point.

And the Belgian superstar was enjoying the success of Chelsea when he met up again with Turkish chef Salt Bae – real name Nusret Gokce.

Lukaku wore black gloves as he carefully removed the steak ribs as if he were taking home a penalty in the lower corner.

And his face remained a study of concentration as he broke the meat and seasoned it from a plate held up by Nusret.

Lukaku kept his dreamy look of delight as he prepared for dinner.

But all in all, it was a case of Deja Chew .. or Deja Roo.

That’s because it was a return visit for Lukaku AND just days after Wayne Rooney brought his family there.

In the distant days before the coronavirus pandemic – back in January 2019 – Lukaku joined two of his then Manchester United teammates at Salt Bae’s Nusr-Et Dubai restaurant.

And few could claim he has done much better since then than Anthony Martial, who still plays at United, and Andreas Pereira, who is now on loan from Old Trafford to Flamengo.

Jump back this week and United legend Rooney accompanied Ms. Coleen with her four sons.

Nusret posted snapshots when the six Rooneys posed next to a huge poster on which he sprinkled salt over a huge steak.

And for Derby boss Rooney, it was a nice change to dig into a steak when the Rams poke their teeth – as they support the championship table.

U.S. officers maintain shut watch on the ‘delta plus’ mutation because it spreads within the U.Okay.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, testifies before a Senate hearing on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions at the U.S. Capitol on May 11, 2021.

Jim Lo Scalzo | Swimming pool | Reuters

US health officials are watching an emerging Covid-19 sub-variant dubbed “Delta Plus,” which some scientists say is more contagious than the already highly transmissible Delta variant.

Formally known as AY.4.2, Delta plus contains two new mutations in the spike protein, A222V and Y145H, that allow the virus to enter the body. These mutations were found in other variants of Covid, so it is unclear how dramatic these changes will be on the virus.

Francois Balloux, director of the Genetics Institute at University College London, said it could be 10% -15% more contagious than Delta, which first appeared in India and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is spreading more easily than Ebola, SARS, MERS, and the 1918 Spanish flu.

According to CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky has an R-zero or reproduction rate of eight or nine, which means that every person who has Covid will pass it on to up to nine other people. The “wild type” or original strain of Covid had an estimated R-value of about three. Someone infected with the Delta variant carries 1,000 times the viral load of the original Covid strain.

India’s Ministry of Health reported in June that Delta plus was more transmissible than the Delta variant, adding that the subtype binds more tightly to lung cell receptors and could even reduce the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody treatments.

The mutation was discovered in the United States, but there has been no noticeable increase in Delta Plus cases nationwide, Walensky said at a Covid briefing at the White House on Wednesday.

“We are specifically monitoring sublines that could affect therapeutics such as monoclonal antibodies and vaccines,” said Walensky. “There is currently no evidence that subline AY.4.2 will affect the effectiveness of our current vaccines or therapeutics.”

The sub-variant AY.4.2 has been detected in at least five cases in the United States since August: in Washington, DC, California, North Carolina, Washington State and Massachusetts, see above Outbreak.info. The website collects data from GISAID, a global genome database on Covid and influenza cases.

Top health officials have been warning for weeks that stronger and potentially vaccine-resistant variants of Covid could develop as long as widespread outbreaks continue, fueled by billions of people around the world who remain unvaccinated. Dr. Anthony Fauci., White House Chief Medical Officer said in August that the US could be “in trouble” if another mutation crosses the delta, urging the unvaccinated to get their vaccinations in hopes of containing a surge that has crushed the nation’s health systems this summer.

Finally, Delta plus could also affect the age groups eligible to receive Covid booster doses, said Dr. Peter Marks, the Food and Drug Administration’s lead vaccine regulator, on Wednesday evening. The FDA and CDC have approved Covid boosters for a wide variety of US adults from all three manufacturers in the US: Modern, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer.

“The exact age of this will be based on what we see of the emerging situation which is quite dynamic right now as we continue to see reports of new variants,” said Marks. “And we are also seeing changes in the epidemiology of Covid-19 in our country, with new hotspots emerging even as certain places become extinct.”

Concern about Delta Plus is high in the UK, where officials are grappling with a surge in cases and facing another health crisis. Delta Plus cases accounted for about 6% of all sequenced Covid cases in the week beginning September 27, according to the latest data from the country’s health authority. The subline is “becoming more common” in the UK, noted the agency and doctors from the National Health Service Confederation in London request a return to stricter Covid protocols in the winter.

But global health leaders urge the public not to panic. While the emergence of a Covid subtype does not equate to the development of an entirely new variant, tracking Delta’s progress could enable the medical community to better understand the mutation, says Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri, Covid-19 incident manager at the World Health Organization’s regional office for the Americas, said at a briefing on Oct. 6.

“When you look at these additional changes, it can help researchers track the variants on a fine scale,” Aldighieri said. “But they don’t imply any functional or biological difference.”

Watch SpaceX livestream Inspiration4 splashdown: Crew Dragon returns

SpaceX safely brought its Crew Dragon spaceship back from orbit on Saturday, with the capsule bringing the four members of the Inspiration4 mission back to Earth after three days in space.

Crew Dragon Resilience capsule plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

“Thank you SpaceX, it was a lot of fun for us and we’re just getting started!” said Inspiration4 commander Jared Isaacman from the capsule.

In less than an hour after spraying, SpaceX loaded the capsule onto its salvage ship and the crew disembarked, each waving and thumbs up after disembarking. The crew are then flown from the ship to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, which is just a short flight from the splash point.

Inspiration4 Mission Director Scott Poteet participated in a post-splashdown call with reporters speaking from the SpaceX recovery ship.

“The group is in a great mood, they are having a lot of fun and everyone is looking forward to getting back together with their families,” said Poteet.

Elon Musk tweeted his congratulations to the crew shortly after the splash.

The historical private mission – which includes Isaacman, the pilot Sian Proctor, the medical officer Hayley Arceneaux and the mission specialist Chris Sembroski – orbited the earth at an altitude of up to 590 kilometers, which is located above the International Space Station and which has been furthest above the surface for years has traveled. As a free-flying space flight, the capsule did not dock on the ISS, but circled the earth independently at a speed of 15 orbits per day.

Benji Reed, SpaceX’s senior director of manned space programs, told reporters after the splash that the company’s sales and marketing teams had seen an “increased” number of inquiries from people interested in buying a private spaceflight. He said SpaceX can fly “five or six” private missions a year.

“When the demand is there, we will see what we can do to further develop this capability,” said Reed.

Reed also noted that there were “some issues” that SpaceX had resolved during the space flight, including the waste management system or the toilet on board the spacecraft. Todd Ericson, Inspiration4 Mission Director, added that the toilet “has a problem with a fan that is part of the system,” but a workaround has been implemented with no significant issues.

Inspiration4 shared photos from the crew’s time in orbit and gives a view of the wide view from the “dome” window of the spacecraft.

This is the third time SpaceX has brought astronauts back from space, and the second time for this capsule – which previously flew the Crew 1 mission for NASA on a trip that returned in May.

Both previous SpaceX astronaut missions crashed in the Gulf of Mexico, making them the first to return in the Atlantic.

The mission also comes with several other milestones for Musks Companies including: the first private SpaceX spaceflight, the first completely unprofessional crew to become astronauts, the first black space traveler, the youngest American astronaut to date, and the first person to fly in space with a prosthesis.

Inspiration4 was paid for by Isaacman for an undisclosed amount with the primary aerospace goal of raising $ 200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur, personally donated $ 100 million, with the Mission raising an additional $ 53.8 million in donations as of Saturday night, according to the Mission’s website.
