Might stadium cash go to police as a substitute?

The city of Albuquerque would commit its gross income tax to pay off a new bond on a multi-purpose football stadium if voters approve it this fall. (Adolphe Pierre-Louis / Journal File)

Albuquerque voters will decide this fall whether the city should invest in a new multi-purpose football stadium, using millions of dollars that the project’s supporters say would otherwise not go to crime-fighting.

The narrative, which recently hit social media, bypasses the fact that the money tied up in the proposed $ 50 million stadium loan is being legally spent on public safety – or many other basic city services should the bond fail.

If voters approve the stadium bond when they vote on November 2nd, the city would borrow $ 50 million by issuing bonds to design and build the venue. The city would mortgage gross tax receipts to pay off the resulting debt – officials estimate payments will amount to about $ 3.2 million a year for 20 years.

BRT is the tax that is levied on the sale of goods and services. It’s more flexible than some sources of income; the city can use it for capital expenditures such as buildings as well as basic city operations. GRT is the lifeblood of the city’s general fund, which covers police and firefighters salaries, park maintenance, road maintenance, animal shelters, and more.

But amid criticism from some residents that the city has much greater needs than a football stadium, a stadium-friendly political action committee recently created an information graphic that differentiates between the money the city would spend on the stadium and the money the city would spend on the stadium used them for crime fighting.

The committee, NM For Art & Sport, is so far funded entirely by New Mexico United, according to recent campaign funding reports. United is the professional football team that, through a lease with the city, would be the main tenant of the new stadium.

The PAC’s fact-versus-fiction stadium graphic – shared by fans on various social media platforms – states as a fact: “The money used to fight crime in Albuquerque comes from the general fund. The money that would be used for this stadium is tied up for investment projects. Not spending money on a stadium does not mean that more money is available for fighting crime. “

It’s true that the tax revenue the city would use to repay a stadium loan was spent on debt related to other capital projects until this summer.

But the city recently paid off some of those bonds, releasing about $ 4 million annually, said Sanjay Bhakta, Albuquerque’s chief financial officer. The city could borrow money for a stadium and use these newly realized savings for annual payments – a strategy to finance the stadium without increasing taxes.

The city council pushed this plan forward in August and passed a bill that issues the $ 50 million tax bond for electoral approval and ties the money to the stadium project.

David Carl, United’s Director of Communications and Chairman of the Pro Stadium PAC, defended the graphic’s message based on this vote.

“On August 16, the city council voted 7-2 to allocate these funds to capital projects,” he wrote in a statement to the Journal. “We stand by our factually correct statement that not spending money on a stadium means that there is no more money available for fighting crime.”

He claims that the stadium could eventually generate new funds for public safety.

But if the $ 50 million stadium loan doesn’t go through, the money won’t be stuck in capital projects forever, even if it’s been there before.

It would be conceivable to go to the general fund, where he could pay the running costs of the city, including the police; or it could remain as a source of funding for capital projects.

That would be a matter for the city guides.

Should the loan fail, redistributing the money would require “going through the entire council process again,” said Bhakta in an email, noting that both the council and the mayor would have a say.

Payments need new stadium to be utterly funded by taxpayer cash

For most of the new stadiums funded with public money, taxpayers do not pay the full bill. In Buffalo, that’s what the Bills want the citizens to do.

According to Tom Precious of Buffalo News, Pegula Sports and Entertainment has tabled a $ 1.5 billion proposal for a new Bills stadium and renovation costs for the arena where the Buffalo saber Play hockey. According to the report, the proposal is calls for the cost of the new Bills Stadium to be fully covered by public funds.

According to the report, this is a “non-runner”.

And here’s the kicker from the article that will meet a loud and hostile reaction from all Bills fans in Buffalo who refuse to acknowledge the reality that football is a business: “The team has no open threats, according to sources Definitely leave Buffalo if it doesn’t get the full funding request, but it has made it clear to government negotiators that there are other cities elsewhere that would want and pay well for an NFL franchise.

Here is the fundamental reality when it comes to stadium politics. The owners ask for free money to keep the team where it is. When that money isn’t available, they look to other cities that would be willing to pay the bill – either as leverage or as a real and genuine alternative.

That’s why the Raiders left Oakland. They couldn’t get much (or any) public money to stay where they were. You have a huge amount of it to move to Las Vegas. So they did.

And when a team is going to pay for their own stadium (Bill’s co-owner Kim Pegula previously said they cannot afford that).

That’s why the Rams left St. Louis. Stan Kroenke, who could have gotten sizable public money in St. Louis, decided to write the check for his own apartment because he believes it will pay off and more.

The story goes on

It’s too early in Buffalo to suspect the Bills might move. However, the Pegulas may have to convince state and local officials that they are ready to move the team in order to get the kind of public money they want.

It is also quite possible that the 100 percent proposal is just a prelude and that the Bills are willing to partially finance the stadium with Pegula funds or PSLs. Regardless, the end result will surely be somewhere between 100 percent and zero; the fact that everything is supposed to be covered by taxpayers’ money suggests that the total death toll is closer to 100 than zero.

We’ll see where it goes from here. The Pegulas supposedly want a quick fix. The current lease expires in 2023. So the clock is ticking and the battle lines come into focus. At a time when Bills fans have reason to look forward to their team, they may soon have to worry about the potential exit.

Jersey Shore BlueClaws Again within the Stadium, Offering Aggressive Leisure and Household Enjoyable

June 10, 2021

Jersey Shore BlueClaws are back in the stadium, offering competitive entertainment and family fun

By Tim Morris

Professional minor league baseball is back with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. BlueClaws fans could see their team in action on May 4th as they opened their 2021 season at home in FirstEnergy Park.

One of the most popular summer pastimes on the Jersey Shore is back. Professional minor league baseball and its fan-friendly environment have returned to FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood after a year of absence due to the pandemic with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws.

The BlueClaws, a minor league subsidiary of the Philadelphia Phillies, officially opened the 2021 season on May 4th at FirstEnergy Park.

“There is a lot of excitement,” said BlueClaws director of communications and radio station Greg Giombarrese. “It’s been a unique year for us with the name change, the promotion and the 614 days between the season opener and our last game.”

As expected, the response from the population and regional companies was positive. When tickets went on sale, the public devoured them. Since the BlueClaws played their first home game in 2001, nearly 8 million people have walked through the turnstiles to watch a game. Catching a BlueClaws game became a must.

Due to the current restrictions on the stadium with 6,588 seats, the team cannot currently occupy all seats. Tickets are sold in pods for two to six people with social distancing.

However, more fans can watch the team play in person via the stadium’s 360-degree hall, where they can watch the games from picnic tables and grass berms outdoors.

Aside from simply getting back to the game, there is excitement about the caliber of baseball that is played in Lakewood. Jersey Shore is playing in the High A East division this year, not the new Low A division.

“The players have come one step closer to the Major Leagues,” said Giombarrese.

The BlueClaws 2021 are managed by Chris Adamson and have a roster of 30 people. Major league health protocols are followed in minor leagues. It is more likely than ever that fans will have the opportunity to see players advancing to the big league.

Due to the pandemic and the resulting loss of revenue, Major League Baseball restructured the minor leagues, with many cities losing their teams due to cost reductions. Giombrasse said the BlueClaws were confident the team would be back in business after baseball returned.

“We’ve had a great relationship with the Phillies all along, and we’ve been great partners,” he said.

Even in the single aloop, the BlueClaws sent more than their fair share of players to the next level.

“108 players went to the show from the bank,” noted Giombarrese.

The team has withdrawn two numbers, number 19 from Cole Hamels and number 29 from Ryan Howard. Hamels was an all-star pitcher for the Phillies and the MVP of the 2008 Philadelphia World Series champions. First baseman Howard was also a multiple All-Star for Philadelphia, as well as Rookie of the Year, the 2006 National League MVP, and was a key member of the 2008 Champion Team.

Another positive aspect of the restructuring is the division in which the BlueClaws are located. You are located with the Hudson Valley Renegades (Yankees), Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets), Wilmington Blue Rocks (Nationals) and Aberdeen Iron Birds (Orioles). Having the Yankee and Met teams in the division is a plus, explained Giombarrese, because it helps audience numbers as Yankee and Met teams will draw their fans into the stadium. In addition, the close proximity of the teams makes it easier for BlueClaws fans to see their team play on the street.

The BlueClaws play a 120 game board with 60 home appointments.

Jhailyn Ortiz (13) high fives Logan O’Hoppe (6) after his double home run in the fifth inning that helped the Jersey ShoreBlueClaws open the 2021 season with a 6-2 win over Hudson Valley at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood. It was the Blue Claws’ first game in 614 days

In addition to baseball, the BlueClaws offer many other activities for fans. In 2018, the club renovated the ballpark and added the Toyota Home Run Pavilion, which includes a nine-hole mini golf course (each hole is named after a former BlueClaw) and boardwalk games and rides for the family. There are also 17 live fireworks nights, including July 4th, and themed nights. Themed evenings include Pride Night (June 4), Girl Scout Family Night (June 11), Father’s Day (June 13), Camp Day (July 6), Military Appreciation Night (July 8), Autism Awareness Night ( August 6)) and Fan Appreciation Night (September 12).

Baseball fans aren’t the only ones happy that baseball is back. This also applies to those who are dependent on work in the stadium. When the BlueClaws are at home, they employ up to 200 people. This is work that wasn’t available a year ago.

The BlueClaws were the Lakewood BlueClaws until the 2021 season. Giombarrese said the team planned to move from Lakewood to Jersey Shore in 2020 to pay tribute to its large fan base.

“[The name change] the next logical step was to take advantage of the support we have from all over the Jersey Shore, ”said Giombarrese.

Large sports-entertainment mission, Phoenix Rising soccer stadium, resort growth to spice up Wild Horse Move

Zwei I-10-Erweiterungsprojekte stehen an
