LONDON – The surge in Omicron-Covid cases in the UK is so steep that the country has been warned to prepare for a million cases by the end of the month.

The UK health authority said Wednesday that omicron has a significant growth advantage over the Delta variant, “which means it is likely to outperform Delta in the UK and become the dominant variant”.

This assessment is based on an analysis of British data shows increased household transmission risk, increased secondary attack rates (like the likelihood of each case infecting a different person) and increased growth rates compared to Delta, the UKHSA said.

“If the growth rate and doubling time continue as we have seen in the past 2 weeks, we assume that in the next 2 to 4 weeks at least 50% of the coronavirus cases will be caused by the Omicron variant. ” it said in a statement.

Currently, the UK has registered 568 confirmed cases of the variant, however British Health Secretary Sajid Javid told British lawmakers on Wednesday evening that “we know that the real number of infections will be significantly higher.”

“The UK Health Authority estimates that the [current] The number of infections will be about 20 times higher than the number of confirmed cases, and that brings the number of infections closer to 10,000, ”he said.

“At the currently observed doubling rate of two and a half to three days by the end of this month, infections could exceed a million,” warned Javid, saying the UK is facing the “twin threats from both Omicron and Delta variant” that are still occurring makes up the majority of cases worldwide.

The Omicron variant was first spotted in South Africa in early November and reported to the World Health Organization on November 24th. Two days later, the WHO described it as a “questionable variant” and found that it had mutations that were associated with increased transferability.

Since then, the variant has been identified in 57 countries around the world, according to the latest WHO record, and there are increasing cases of community transmission unrelated to travel.

Experts and vaccine manufacturers have made an effort to assess the risk profile of the variant. In particular, they are focusing on how quickly it spreads, whether it causes more serious illness and could lead to an increase in hospital admissions and deaths, and whether it undermines Covid vaccines.

Preliminary data, anecdotal evidence, and a small number of early studies suggest that the Omicron variant is more transmissible than the Delta variant, but it causes milder illness and could undermine the effectiveness of the Covid vaccines currently in use.

However, the WHO technical director on Covid-19 stressed on Wednesday that it is “too early to conclude” that the omicron symptoms are weaker. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added that omicron could change the course of the pandemic.

A number of countries responded to news about the variant with flight bans or quarantines for visitors from countries in southern Africa where the Omicron variant was first detected, as many are already struggling with an increase in delta cases in winter.

The UK went further on Wednesday, advising people who could work from home and introducing stricter measures on wearing masks and using Covid passports.

“Tremendously worrying” distribution

There has been several positive and negative news about the Omicron variant this week, however The global financial markets have recovered in the last few days as traders are betting that the economic impact of the omicron Covid variant will not be as severe as initially feared.

Pfizers CEO Albert Bourla said on Wednesday that People could need a fourth Covid-19 vaccination earlier than expected, while many countries are still introducing third booster vaccinations. Others are still trying to get their population vaccinated with an initial shot, which will help reduce serious infections, hospital stays, and deaths.

Bourla’s comments came after preliminary research showed that the Omicron variant can undermine protective antibodies created by the vaccine made by the company that developed it BioNTech.

The vaccine manufacturers published results of a first laboratory study on Wednesday showed that a third dose of vaccine was effective in combating the Omicron variant, while the effectiveness of the first two-dose series of vaccinations was significantly reduced.

“When we see real data, [we] will determine if and for how long the omicron is well covered by the third dose, “Bourla told CNBC.” And the second point, I think we’re going to need a fourth dose, “he added.

Experts urged caution and said that there are still unknowns about the variant.

Danny Altmann, a professor of immunology at Imperial College London, told CNBC on Thursday that “the Omicron data is hugely worrying,” pointing to the 2.5-day doubling of cases in the UK.

Altmann emphasized, however, that the immunology landscape with Omicron is not much worse than with the Delta variant.

“As in if you are an unvaccinated person or a two-dose vaccinated person who has lost weight [whose vaccine immunity has waned] They essentially have basic protection, little protection from infection, ”he told CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe.

“If you’ve had a booster dose or two doses plus a previous infection, you are probably in the safe zone and that is what it looks like now in three different Omicron studies and in Delta studies.”

Nebraska, Maryland and Pennsylvania all affirm circumstances because it spreads to eight states

At least eight US states now have at least 20 cases of the highly mutated Omicron-Covid-19 variant after Nebraska, Maryland and Pennsylvania confirmed all infections on Friday.

The news comes a day after 10 cases were cconfirmed in Minnesota, Colorado, New York, Hawaii and California, which reported the nation’s first case of the variant in a patient in San Francisco on Wednesday and the tenth case in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Maryland health officials have confirmed cases in three residents of the metropolitan area of Baltimore. One patient was vaccinated and recently traveled to South Africa, and another was unvaccinated and in close contact with that patient, according to a press release from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan.

The third case in Maryland is unrelated to the others and involves a vaccinated person with no recent travel history, the press release said. None of the three people are hospitalized.

The patient in Pennsylvania is a man in his thirties from northwest Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. The department is still working to get more information on the case, it said in a press release.

Hours earlier, Nebraska officials confirmed six infections after a traveler returned from Nigeria and apparently infected five members of her household.

The first patient returned from Nigeria on November 23 and became symptomatic on November 24, according to a press release from the Public Health Solutions District Department of Health.

Only one of the six people was vaccinated and none had to be hospitalized, the department said.

New York officials confirmed five cases late Thursday: one in Suffolk County on Long Island, two in Queens, one in Brooklyn and another in New York City. Minnesota public health officials confirmed the second case of variant in the United States earlier that day in a resident who had recently returned from a New York City convention.

The US is among the list of 38 countries with confirmed cases the World Health Organization announced the Omicron variant on Friday.

President Joe Biden on Thursday tightened pre-departure test rules for international flights and expanded mask requirements on public transport as part of a broader strategy to curb the spread of the new variant.

However, officials in New York and Hawaii who reported cases of the variant Thursday said they believe Omicron is already spreading in their communities.

“This is not just because of people traveling to southern Africa or other parts of the world where Omicron has already been identified,” said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi, at a press conference on Thursday.

Omicron has more than 30 mutations in the spike protein that the virus uses to attach to human cells. According to the WHO, some of the mutations are associated with higher transmission and reduced antibody protection.

Health officials in the US and around the world have feared that the variant could reduce the effectiveness of vaccines to some extent.

“The molecular profile of the types of mutations you see [in omicron] would suggest that it may be more transmissible and could elude some of the protection afforded by vaccines, “White House chief medical officer Dr. Anthony Fauci told reporters on Wednesday.” But we don’t know now.

U.S. officers maintain shut watch on the ‘delta plus’ mutation because it spreads within the U.Okay.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, testifies before a Senate hearing on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions at the U.S. Capitol on May 11, 2021.

US health officials are watching an emerging Covid-19 sub-variant dubbed “Delta Plus,” which some scientists say is more contagious than the already highly transmissible Delta variant.

Formally known as AY.4.2, Delta plus contains two new mutations in the spike protein, A222V and Y145H, that allow the virus to enter the body. These mutations were found in other variants of Covid, so it is unclear how dramatic these changes will be on the virus.

Francois Balloux, director of the Genetics Institute at University College London, said it could be 10% -15% more contagious than Delta, which first appeared in India and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is spreading more easily than Ebola, SARS, MERS, and the 1918 Spanish flu.

According to CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky has an R-zero or reproduction rate of eight or nine, which means that every person who has Covid will pass it on to up to nine other people. The “wild type” or original strain of Covid had an estimated R-value of about three. Someone infected with the Delta variant carries 1,000 times the viral load of the original Covid strain.

India’s Ministry of Health reported in June that Delta plus was more transmissible than the Delta variant, adding that the subtype binds more tightly to lung cell receptors and could even reduce the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody treatments.

The mutation was discovered in the United States, but there has been no noticeable increase in Delta Plus cases nationwide, Walensky said at a Covid briefing at the White House on Wednesday.

“We are specifically monitoring sublines that could affect therapeutics such as monoclonal antibodies and vaccines,” said Walensky. “There is currently no evidence that subline AY.4.2 will affect the effectiveness of our current vaccines or therapeutics.”

The sub-variant AY.4.2 has been detected in at least five cases in the United States since August: in Washington, DC, California, North Carolina, Washington State and Massachusetts, see above The website collects data from GISAID, a global genome database on Covid and influenza cases.

Top health officials have been warning for weeks that stronger and potentially vaccine-resistant variants of Covid could develop as long as widespread outbreaks continue, fueled by billions of people around the world who remain unvaccinated. Dr. Anthony Fauci., White House Chief Medical Officer said in August that the US could be “in trouble” if another mutation crosses the delta, urging the unvaccinated to get their vaccinations in hopes of containing a surge that has crushed the nation’s health systems this summer.

Finally, Delta plus could also affect the age groups eligible to receive Covid booster doses, said Dr. Peter Marks, the Food and Drug Administration’s lead vaccine regulator, on Wednesday evening. The FDA and CDC have approved Covid boosters for a wide variety of US adults from all three manufacturers in the US: Modern, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer.

“The exact age of this will be based on what we see of the emerging situation which is quite dynamic right now as we continue to see reports of new variants,” said Marks. “And we are also seeing changes in the epidemiology of Covid-19 in our country, with new hotspots emerging even as certain places become extinct.”

Concern about Delta Plus is high in the UK, where officials are grappling with a surge in cases and facing another health crisis. Delta Plus cases accounted for about 6% of all sequenced Covid cases in the week beginning September 27, according to the latest data from the country’s health authority. The subline is “becoming more common” in the UK, noted the agency and doctors from the National Health Service Confederation in London request a return to stricter Covid protocols in the winter.

But global health leaders urge the public not to panic. While the emergence of a Covid subtype does not equate to the development of an entirely new variant, tracking Delta’s progress could enable the medical community to better understand the mutation, says Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri, Covid-19 incident manager at the World Health Organization’s regional office for the Americas, said at a briefing on Oct. 6.

“When you look at these additional changes, it can help researchers track the variants on a fine scale,” Aldighieri said. “But they don’t imply any functional or biological difference.”

China orders Wuhan mass testing, Beijing restrictions as Covid delta spreads

China is facing a resurgence in major cities of Beijing to Wuhan, and authorities have mass tests and widespread travel restrictions in some areas.

Daily Covid-19 cases are on the rise again as the Delta variant spreads across the country.

China’s National Health Commission said it confirmed 96 Covid cases on Wednesday – 90 cases and more were reported for the third day in a row. Of the newly confirmed cases, 71 were transmitted locally, said the health commission.

Economists fear that strict government crackdown on movements could harm the economy – the only major economy that grew last year.

“China has already shown that it is ready to take tough measures to control Covid, and we have no doubt it will do so this time too,” said Robert Carnell, regional director of Asia-Pacific research at Dutch bank ING , in a note on Wednesday.

“The strict restrictions on movement and travel that already exist will likely produce the desired results. But the Delta variant is a particularly slippery little creature, and the concern for us and many others is how quickly this will happen and at” what the economy has cost in the meantime, “he added.

When Covid-19 first surfaced in the country in late 2019, authorities put in place strict lockdowns and mass testing to control the nationwide outbreak.

Since then, the Chinese authorities have cracked down on all flare-ups of Covid infections. The recent proliferation of the more highly transmissible Covid Delta variant has once again prompted authorities to tighten containment measures across the country.

The state media agency Xinhua reported authorities have urged people to restrict travel and avoid gatherings, and to suspend some flights, trains and long-distance bus services.

The capital Beijing imposed strict entry and exit controls on Sunday and is said to be in a “critical stage” of epidemic control after cases rose for the first time in months in late July, Xinhua reported.

The city of Wuhan, where the corona virus first appeared, will test all of its residents for new Covid cases, the news agency said.

As of July 20, Wuhan had administered more than 17 million doses of Covid vaccines, and the vaccination rate for those 18-year-olds and above was 77.63%, according to the Wuhan City Health Commission.

“Slow patch” in China’s economy

China’s economic recovery has been mixed, with export-oriented sectors accounting for most of the growth, while domestic consumption has recovered more slowly.

The resurgence of Covid-19 infections and recent containment measures would delay a recovery in Chinese budget spending, said Sian Fenner, chief Asian economist at consultancy Oxford Economics.

“The geographic spread of the Delta variant is going to be a concern for the Chinese authorities. We have already seen that they have very little tolerance for, you know, even a relatively small flare-up,” she told CNBC “Squawk Box Asia” On Wednesday.

“We were hoping that this would actually improve service consumption through the increase in vaccination rates, but it looks like we’ll see a different kind of slow patch in the future and … the delayed recovery in household spending,” she added.

Fenner said she is sticking to her full-year growth forecast of 8.4% for China for now. That is slightly more than the International Monetary Fund’s forecast 8.1% growth in China.

Ingwer Sesam Blumenkohl

½ Tasse gefrorene Erbsen (60 Gramm)

1 Karotte, in dünne Scheiben geschnitten

3 Esslöffel Tamari oder Sojasauce

1 Esslöffel Tahin

1 Esslöffel Honig

2 Teelöffel Chili-Knoblauch-Sauce

1 Teelöffel Reisessig

1 Knoblauchzehe, gehackt

Taipei closes leisure venues as virus outbreak spreads

Issued on: 14/05/2021 – 12:42Modified: 14/05/2021 – 12:40

Taipei (AFP)

Taiwan’s capital announced a permanent closure of entertainment venues on Friday after more local coronavirus infections broke out.

The self-governing island has been hailed as a world leader in containing the Covid-19 pandemic. Only 1,290 confirmed cases, 12 deaths, and minimal social distancing were required once the first outbreak was suppressed.

But an outbreak, first noted among pilots, has spread across the community, forcing restrictions to be reinstated in a location that has so far weathered the pandemic unscathed.

The decision of the Taipei City Government will apply to bars, dance clubs, karaoke lounges, nightclubs, saunas and internet cafes as well as hostess clubs and teahouses from Saturday.

Municipal facilities like libraries and sports centers will also be closed.

The move came after Taiwan reported 29 locally transmitted Covid-19 cases on Friday – a daily high – including 16 cases linked to a cluster that involved hostess teahouses in the city.

The source of seven of the local infections was still pending, health officials said.

“The outbreak continues to grow, so we need to improve pandemic prevention measures,” Mayor Ko Wen-je told reporters.

“But we urge residents not to panic … We had effectively kept the pandemic under control over the past year, but we may have become too relaxed. We need to be vigilant again and we can still bring it under control.”

Taiwan raised the coronavirus alert and banned large gatherings earlier this week after the final cluster spread in Taipei and other cities.

In the north of Taoyuan, where there was a group of employees from an airline and an airport hotel, the city government has also decided to close the entertainment facilities from Saturday to June 8th.

A similar cluster, centered around a hospital, resulted in large Lantern Festival events being suspended during the lunar new year in February. This outbreak was quickly brought under control.

Last year, Taiwan had 253 days with no local infections.

Queen Creek yoga teacher spreads messages of self-love, raises cash for nonprofits

Talfrau launches her own version of the butterfly effect

A yoga teacher finds unique ways to help people make big changes in their lives.

A woman down in the valley starts her own version of the butterfly effect by using yoga to teach people to love themselves and make big changes in their lives.

Now she’s working to spread the love by participating in two different fundraisers.

Erica Marquez is the owner of Butterfly Effect Aerial Yoga. She started her practice as a social worker to meditate and stay in shape.

Along the way, she realized that she could also help people by teaching these techniques.

“I started in the middle of the pandemic and it has enabled my social worker side to reach people in my community,” said Marquez.

Classes do not take place in the traditional stationary studio – everything is mobile.

On April 24th the Yoga “Studio” organizes a charity event at Desert Sky Park, where they offer six 30-minute classes to donate at least $ 10.

The proceeds, according to Marquez, will go to Maggie’s Place in Phoenix, a shelter designed to help pregnant women who need help to get out of their current life situation.

“They really are an amazing organization that helps women in a time of need,” said Marquez.

The yoga teacher also participates in a Yoga Warrior competition that supports the nonprofit Yoga for Veterans project. The money raised will help veterans across the country use yoga as a form of therapy for symptoms of PTSD.

“If I win the competition, I’ll get a spot in a magazine to get my message across about loving yourself,” said Marquez.

Just like her students need the support of the silk while in the air, Marquez needs the support of the community to continue making a difference.
