Memorial bike journey raises cash for Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity

BACK MOUNTAIN, Pennsylvania – A 35-mile bike ride through Back Mountain in Lucerne County on Sunday served Habitat for Humanity.

The 12th annual Spencer Martin Memorial Bike Ride started bright and early on Penn State’s Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman Township.

Martin was a longtime volunteer for Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity. At the age of 70 he lost his battle with cancer.

The organizers say Habitat for Humanity could not fulfill its mission without volunteers and charitable gifts.

The proceeds from the trip will help the organization continue to eliminate poor housing.

“Supplies keep getting more expensive. The average house we sell is $ 75,000. Every dollar counts!” said managing director Karen Evans Kaufer.

Each participant received a free t-shirt while driving in Lucerne County.

The group of volunteers came together especially for the erection of the monument. Dubois County Commissioners have agreed to place the memorial on the southeast lawn of the Dubois County Courthouse. Chris Waltz said the foundation proposed the option because the foundation’s funds are generic and in a pool that they are spent out of. “So it’s not focused on any particular thing,” he said. “We wanted to make sure this was targeted to raise the money we needed.”

Kluesner suggested setting up a fund at a financial institution into which the donations could be paid. Chris Waltz said there would be more legitimacy having the fund with the county since the checks would be made out to the county, not an individual.

“We’re trying to make it a little more formal,” said Beth Waltz. “That legitimizes the project. We are looking for that legitimacy and support. ”She added that the number of transactions to and from the fund would be very small.

District Councilor Charmian Klem said she didn’t want the auditors to do any extra work to keep an eye on the fund. She said that when it becomes known that donations are being accepted, people will be chipping in large and small amounts.

“We would ask our staff to devote as much time as necessary to getting it, tracking it, and reviewing it,” she said.

Klem also said she heard concerns, people saying the county’s money should not be used to build the monument. “Gathering this through the auditor could look like public money,” she said.

Kluesner said the council would consider the motion for the next month. The matter will be discussed at the Council meeting on September 27th.
