Provo 4th grader raises cash by means of lemonade stand for inclusive library books

PROVO, Utah – A Provo elementary school student inspired her school to redesign her library and bring in books that have never been found on shelves before.

While Emi Kim hoped to simply spread a diverse, positive message at her own school, it has changed the entire district.

In a school library, children can learn everything they never knew before.

You will be introduced to new characters and will follow the journeys and experiences of these characters.

Emi, a fourth grade student at Westridge Elementary School, admired beautiful pictures in a book called We Are Water Conservationists on Thursday afternoon.

“I really like the illustrations in this book,” she said, turning the page.

Emi loves this particular collection that is on display at one of the library entrances.

“That’s another favorite,” she said, picking up the book The Name Jar. “I have a lot of favorites. This film is about a little girl who is traveling from Korea to America.”

Each story focuses on a subject that Emi learned the hard way in her real life.

The 9 year old is Hawaiian, Polynesian, Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

“I discovered the problem of not being treated the same way based on just how you look,” she said.

Emi told the story of a man who ignored Emi and her mother in a grocery store and pretended not to hear her mother when her mother spoke.

She began to understand human nature better.

“People – we are afraid of what we don’t know,” said Emi. “I think that’s partly why we treat people badly because of their looks, or their culture, or the things they learn about their culture.”

To help people understand their cultural background, Emi brought the topic up at her school.

“She had a Powerpoint and spoke to me about how Caucasian characters and animals are the most common characters in books and that she really wanted to do something about it,” said Kim Hawkins, headmistress and Westridge Elementary.

Emi, her mother, and aunt had a plan to bring more different books to the library, but Emi knew that bringing the collection would cost money. To offset the costs, Emi launched a lemonade and baked goods stand.

She sold butter mochi, cupcakes, cookies, and lemonade. Not only did Emi make enough money to buy 15 books for her school, she made so much that she bought 60 more books for four other schools in the district.

After seeing the passion and drive of this fourth grader, the Provo School District took Emi’s plan a step further.

“Our district has now made the leap that Emi started and they bought the books for all of the elementary schools,” said Hawkins. “So all of our elementary schools now have these incredible books because of Emi.”

She said they plan to use the books for the school district’s Diversity Week in November.

The book collection is called “Emi’s books”.

Emi hopes it will help students learn things they have never known while also ensuring that others like her reflect their own selves in the characters.

“I hope all children are inspired to make positive changes,” she said.

Emi is planning a second fundraiser at a lemonade stand to buy books on children of all abilities.

This lemonade and baking stand will be set up on September 25th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of Westridge Elementary School in Provo.

“Why kiss a frog when you could kiss a princess,” goes the tagline for “Princess Charming,” the self-proclaimed first lesbian reality dating show in the world that is being aired on the German streaming platform TVNOW. Modeled after The Bachelor, the show has several lesbian women vying for the affections of one woman. And for gay men, there’s the show Take Me Out: Boys, Boys, Boys to the same effect.

And then we also have the Heidi Klum-produced-and-hosted show Germany’s Next Topmodel 2021, which features trans model Alex Mariah Peter as its latest winner and Druck, a YouTube series on teenagers in Berlin that aims to represent different ethnic groups in the German capital. It would appear that German TV reflects the kind of pluralism that the country is known for around the world.

Even in the less agile world of cinema, there’s been a steady trend toward greater representation: In recent years, films like Türkisch für Anfänger (2012) — which was spun off from a TV series — and Fack ju Göhte (2013) have also tried to reflect Germany’s changing social structures. But is all this enough?

German popular culture seems to be getting more inclusive, at least when it comes to acknowledging the presence and existence of LGBTQ individuals and of people from different ethnic backgrounds. But until now, television and entertainment in general have primarily stuck to stereotypes when portraying such minorities.

And there has been little public discussion on the various dimensions pertaining to diversity that issues like inclusion in society and — by consequence — the representation of minorities in television and entertainment generally should entail.

Too Turkish to be German?

“You can see that homosexuals, transsexuals and others are indeed represented in German television. Germany is much more liberal than other countries,” says actor Dean Baykan, who was born in Germany to Turkish parents. Compared to Germany, other European countries like Hungary, for example, have been very strict in their punitive attitude towards homosexuality, with a recently tabled law there practically outlawing the public representation of lifestyles that don’t fall in line with so-called traditional family values.

“But while Germany is open in some ways, in other ways it’s actually more conservative,” Baykan continues. “For example, foreigners or those with a foreign background are not taken seriously in feature films or in serious acting projects.”

Baykan himself explains how he once almost scored a major role in a popular crime series on a German TV channel — but only almost. “I made it to the final round,” he said, adding that he feels that his Turkish background may have been the reason for producers deciding against him — despite the fact that he has a western first name. Whether his ethnic background was a dealbreaker or not may never be known, but actors like Baykan feel that they are not being considered for certain roles not because of an apparent lack of  talent but rather because casting directors prefer when they are reduced to representing stereotypes.

‘Drug dealers, criminals and weaklings’

Filmmaker Deiu Hao Do agrees with that sort of assessment. The son of Chinese minority immigrants from Vietnam is part of the project Vielfalt im Film (diversity in film), and represents the Berlin Asian Film Network (BAFNET).

“You have Black people selling drugs, Muslims being cast as criminals, Asian women playing weak characters … But there is much more complexity to these ethnic groups, and these also need to be represented,” he told DW.

In a recent survey conducted by Vielfalt im Film, 5,500 participants said they found that such clichés were being perpetuated by the industry. Nearly 88% said that Arabs were usually represented in stereotypical ways on German television. The number was nearly 83% for Muslims in general, nearly 75% for Asians and 56% for Jews, as anti-Semitism is on the rise across many parts of Europe once more.

Furthermore, 13% said they had faced bias because of their body shape and weight, while 10% of the participants said they had experienced discrimination because of their sexual identity. The study also mentioned homosexual participants saying that they had tried to hide their sexual orientation in order to improve their chances of finding work or obtaining a certain role in a film or show.

Earlier this year, 185 actors in Germany publicly announced in a newspaper article that they identified as “different” and that it was time for them to publicly acknowledge that they were gay, bisexual, lesbian, queer, non-binary and transsexual. They all demanded more visibility and representation in the German entertainment industry, having been pushed into hiding, ignoring or glossing over their identities.

Indeed, broadcasters themselves have been rather reluctant about addressing their actors’ sexual identities directly, even reflecting a sense of denial in some instances. German actress Ulrike Folkerts, for example, is a lesbian in real life but plays a heterosexual police officer in the crime series Tatort.

In a recent interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, she said that she had only recently been asked by the producers of the show — i.e. the regional public broadcaster SWR — to finally reveal her sexual orientation publicly. She refused, saying it was too late to do so.

Diversity = complexity?

Actor Sheri Hagen says that the concept of diversity is not just limited to having LGBTQ stars and the token person with a non-German background being featured in a show. The Lagos-born actor moved to Germany in the early 1990s. She identifies as being a German with Nigerian roots.

Hagen has acted in films like the Oscar-winning Das Leben der Anderen or the previously mentioned television crime series Tatort, and often speaks about the importance of greater inclusion in the German entertainment industry.

“Diversity for me is not just about skin color or gender, which is what the dominant thinking in the German film industry, is” she says, adding that diversity also “includes disabilities, sexual identity, weight-based discrimination, east-west discrimination — especially here in Germany — class-based differences, ethnic differences, cultural differences, skin color and more.”

Filmmaker Deiu Hao Do agrees that in this context, it is important to understand how these various dimensions of diversity and the related aspects of potential discrimination interact with each other. Fighting this sort of exclusion is central to promoting the cause of diversity, he stressed.

A sore lack of perspective

Streaming platforms have created alternative ways for filmmakers from around the world to showcase their work and reach new audiences. And while content from some parts of the world has certainly capitalized on this potential, these new opportunities haven’t translated into creating a greater amount of diverse streaming content coming from Germany.

Hagen says that Germany can learn a lot from best practices of inclusion currently employed  in the British film industry, where shows like Bridgerton and a recent limited series on the life of Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII, have used colorblind casting as a means to promote diversity even in period dramas.

Sheri Hagen says that diversity is indeed not about the token actor of color in a television series but rather about a more holistic approach. The recently aired German TV-series Breaking Even, which stars Ugandan-German actor Lorna Ishema in the main role, is a case-in-point for her. Hagen says that diversity is also about who’s writing the story, how these stories are communicated and who executes these ideas on camera.

As of today, she adds, the boards of most German media broadcasters are still “male and white” — and her assessment is, de facto, not wrong. Rockford organizations kind committee to make leisure extra inclusive

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Rockford organizations come together to find ways to be more inclusive.

RAVE and Friends of the Coronado formed a DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) committee.

The group provided insights into breaking down barriers and ensuring an inclusive environment for entertainment and programming in local facilities.

These include the BMO Harris Bank Center and the Coronado.

A RAVE board member tells us that the committee will work to make local organizations more welcoming.

“We’re moving from this immediate action step to making sure we are continuously engaged and actually accountable when it comes to our goals because that is definitely something we will focus on in the long game. It won’t happen overnight, but we’re committed to being more inclusive, ”said Martesha Brown.

Monitoring the cash: Bid to make enterprise rescue extra inclusive undercut by lack of information

“The data gap for PPP loans has been a persistent problem since Congress launched the program almost a year ago,” said House Small Business Chair Nydia Velázquez (DN.Y.) said POLITICO. “The lack of demographics hampers our ability to ensure that money reaches underserved businesses that were originally excluded from the program.”

The lack of data on PPP borrowers is one of the biggest challenges for the administration in reviewing the program. This is extremely popular as the loans can be granted if employers keep payroll but are affected by complaints of unequal access, opaque rules, and fraud. Assuming the PPP hasn’t reached enough underserved businesses, Biden is revising the program to expand access and target the smallest employers. Congress also provided funding for the smallest businesses and PPP lenders targeting low-income and low-income communities.

The SBA lacks the power to compel PPP borrowers to disclose demographic information. Agency officials point to the December Economic Facilitation Act, which requires borrowers to report demographic information at their own discretion, as well as fair lending rules designed to deter banks from discriminating against customers. Private lenders are responsible for distributing the loans.

The Trump administration only began voluntarily starting PPP applicants to volunteer demographic information when the program restarted this year. The Biden administration made the questions a more important part of the application process. But most companies still don’t reveal the details even when asked. One challenge cited by lenders is that borrowers fear discrimination in providing the data.

About 75 percent of PPP recipients this year did not indicate their ethnicity, and 58 percent did not indicate their gender, according to SBA data. 65 percent didn’t say they were veterans.

The SBA’s inspector general, who first raised concerns last May, said in a January report that the agency’s efforts to reach underserved markets “may never be fully known” without full data.

“We need more information about these loans so that we can assess the effectiveness of the programs and know where we can better use future relief,” said the chairman of the Senate for banks Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). “We need to make sure these programs work for all businesses, including minority and women-owned businesses.”

The data is important in holding government and lenders accountable for the success of a program that has provided more than 7 million government-sponsored loans through private banks. The information is also vital as officials seek to recalibrate the PPP to reach more Americans before it expires in late March.

When the Trump administration rushed to launch the PPP last year, the SBA was criticized for not doing enough to ensure that the smallest businesses had access to the program. Those concerns were fueled by news that big companies like Shake Shack and Ruths Chris were among the first to get credit. Concerns grew after the program’s initial funding ran out in less than two weeks before Congress replenished it.

Access fears were just one of a series of controversies surrounding the program that the SBA and Treasury Department embarked on to save a free-fall economy that hurt minorities the most.

A Federal Reserve poll published in February found that 79 percent of Asian-owned small businesses and 77 percent of black-owned small businesses described their financial situation as “fair” or “bad,” compared with 57 percent of companies as a whole. A survey published by Facebook and the Small Business Roundtable found that the closure rate for small businesses in majority and minority neighborhoods was 36 percent, compared with 22 percent for businesses in non-minority neighborhoods.

“Much damage was done to equitable access at the beginning of the program,” said Michael Roth, who joined the SBA as a senior advisor in January, in an interview. owned business today than you had in March [2020]. The reports provide metrics on the money flowing into low-income, low-income neighborhoods and rural areas for a bigger picture.

According to SBA dates through February 25th92 percent of PPP loans that year went to companies with 20 or fewer employees. Almost 25 percent of approved PPP funds went to low-income and low-income areas and 17 percent to rural areas.

The administration says the proportion of funding going to companies with fewer than 10 employees in the first month of the PPP’s relaunch this year is up 60 percent from the first month of the program last year. The average loan size – one of the administration’s measures of success – fell by 42 percent over the same period. However, the SBA says that the share of aid goes to low and middle income areas has remained “stagnant” compared to the first round of the PPP.

“If you look at the last round and time series, it almost looks like the largest corporations and businesses in high-income neighborhoods got money first, and smaller businesses and businesses in low-income neighborhoods got money last.” said Roth from the SBA. “So we’re trying to reverse that. The only way to reverse these things is to understand the metrics behind them and achieve real goals.”
