Evaluate: Liam Neeson’s again, combating on skinny ice (actually) | Arts & Leisure

It’s fascinating to imagine Liam Neeson’s management team thinking about their next film. Maybe “Uber Express”? Maybe “Lyfted Up”?

Neeson and vehicles simply have something symbiotic – not just cars, but also airplanes (“Non-Stop”), S-Bahn (“The Commuter”) and even snow plows (“Cold Pursuit”).

And now in “The Ice Road”, This long-lived action hero, who is unlikely to push 70, is behind the wheel of a big old truck – not a regular truck, but a 65,000-pound rig. And of course not on normal roads. On icy roads, i.e. frozen lakes or oceans, where the thaw in spring brings treacherous conditions and one wrong move sends you straight into the icy abyss.

Fortunately, Neeson has the ability to give even the most superficial conspiracies its crude dignity – because this one is, it must be said, superficial. All you need to understand is three elements: good guys, bad guys – no subtlety here – and the fact that ice is very slippery and very cold and tends to melt in the sunshine. I have it?

In this latest edition of the Neeson Vehicle Canon, written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, Neeson is Mike McCann, a truck driver who is also the caretaker for his brother Gurty, a war veteran suffering from PTSD. Mike can’t hold on to one job for long – he’s had eleven jobs in eight years, and we see him get fired from his latest job after covering up a guy who makes fun of his brother’s wartime aphasia. But his luck might change.

A methane accident causes a diamond mine to explode in remote Manitoba, Canada, killing eight miners and trapping 26. There’s a 30-hour oxygen window, but rescuers need a wellhead first. The only way to get the wellhead to the mine is by truck.

But it’s April when the ice roads leading to the mine melt. No trucker would attempt such a suicide mission.

Responding to a warning from Jim Goldenrod, the organizer of the impossible rescue, Mike offers his driving skills (yes, Neeson still has special skills) and brother Gurty (Marcus Thomas) as an ace mechanic. The duo will soon be hired and is managed by Goldrenrod himself (Laurence Fishburne, unfortunately underutilized here) and Tantoo (Amber Midthunder), a spirited young driver for whom the job is more personal than financial – her brother is trapped in the mine.

In the convoy of three oil rigs is one more passenger: an insurance man from the company that operates the mine, apparently needed for his actuarial skills (Benjamin Walker, whose considerable acting talent is not really encouraged here, if you’ll excuse the pun).

In a movie that puts a lot of emphasis on great sets, but skims on character development and backstory, we know from the start who the good guys are – especially Mike and Gurty. We also know soon enough who the bad guys are; they are as cartoonish as possible. As for the ice cream, well, there’s a lot, and it’s getting thinner and thinner – what could be said of the plot in trying to get low-hanging fruit off the tree of potential puns.

The lyrics of the Johnny Cash song on the country-inspired soundtrack offer more low-hanging fruit: “All I do is drive, drive, drive”, it says (sung by Jason Isbell). “Try to stay alive.” And while you might think back to those lyrics as you watch Neeson’s Mike do just that – drive, drive, drive – you might also be focusing on the “living” part.

That’s because Neeson’s persistence as an action hero seems more noticeable over the years. Yes, he’s older and more fragile and paler here, and there isn’t even a hint of love interest – unless you count Mike’s believable love for his brother, the only developed relationship in the script. But just like Mike, he does the job, and he’s the reason to look at this.

The Ice Road, a Netflix publication, was rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “strong language and sequences of plot and violence. “Running time: 103 minutes. Two out of four stars.

State offers cash to avoid wasting, renovate Riverview Ice Home

ROCKFORD (WREX) – The Riverview Ice House was on the verge of the cost of renovating the facility last year, but the community insisted on keeping it. Government funds are now helping to save it.

The Ice House has been a downtown Rockford landmark for nearly 45 years.

“As we know, there is a threat of closure and the renovation needs money,” said Democratic Senator Steve Stadelman on Wednesday afternoon at a press conference with Governor JB Pritzker.

In October, the Rockford Park District announced plans to close the ice house, citing the high maintenance costs, however The park district’s decision brought broad social support for the facility.

“The community will always take the park district further than we can, as will the staff, within our available resources,” said Jay Sandine, executive director of Rockford Park District.

But when the new Illinois budget was passed in Springfield, the park district received some of the money it needed to save the $ 2.5 million facility.

Stadelman says this is “to ensure that children from all over the community can continue their ice-cream activities”.

The money will be used for two sheets of ice, a new cooling system and the renovation of the changing rooms, but these are just some of the work that will be needed in the ice house.

“The total project to renovate Riverview is around $ 6 million,” says Sandine.

But the $ 2.5 million state government still leaves a $ 3.5 million void that the park district needs to fill.

“Probably something we either have to tie up or, while we continue to free our footprint, we have to sell assets.” [and] maybe we can take some of that money to cover these costs, “explains Sandine, saying that there are a few ways we can raise the money we need.

But Sandine says the park district is determined to find the money.

As for the schedule, the plan is to start renovations in spring 2022 and reopen in autumn 2022.

Sandine credits Stadelman and the Rockford Ward with saving the Ice House.

The moment came just after the President’s introduction when he – surely – caught sight of the youngest members of the audience. The President stepped off the podium and walked over to a woman with two little girls for a brief interaction that briefly confused the crowd.

Back on the podium, the President declared, “I had to make sure these little girls got an ice cream.”

As the girls and their mother Lisa Madden emerged from the speech, she explained what had happened.

“He came over and gave them something discreetly and I didn’t even see what he gave them and he told them to get some ice cream,” Madden said.

The twins are four and a half and are called Nola and Indie. Madden is on the board of directors at the Greenwood Cultural Center, so they had a front row seat.

The President said the ice cream was their payment.

“My lord, I have to sit out a speech from the president. In my faith we call it purgatory, ”said Biden.

The girls came out with a plan and hit the streets and quickly returned with the ice cream – courtesy of the President – that was worth the day for these two little girls.

The two new concepts – Square Cut Pizza and Sugar Room – come from Emil and Liz David, the owners of the Hot Buns Food Truck in Louisville. Metropolis Units Opening Date For Newly Renovated The Dice Ice And Leisure Heart

The city of Santa Clarita gave a first glimpse into the renovated Valencia ice station on Tuesday, which has been renamed “The Cube – Ice Cream and Entertainment Center”. She showed upgrades of the plant and announced an opening date in April.

Some of the first things residents might notice when visiting the renovated Valencia facility are new landscaping and new blue and white colors inside and out to match the city’s official colors.

The ice station was purchased by the city of Santa Clarita for $ 14.2 million in August. On March 5, the city announced that the site’s name had been changed to “The Cube” through social media.

The 93,000 square meter area offers space for up to 2,400 people and offers events such as congresses, conferences, sports competitions and concerts as well as sports such as hockey and ice skating.

According to Frank Oviedo, Deputy City Administrator for the City of Santa Clarita, renovations to the facilities, including replacing the cube’s old reading board and installing new ice on the rinks, began in December 2020 on a budget of $ 720,000.

One of the major renovations currently under way by the city is the replacement of the reading board near the main entrance to the Cube. The board is to be replaced with a larger LED screen that will also cover the windows above the old board.

“You will be able to see what’s going on on the ice, as well as everything we’re showing from a marketing or sponsorship point of view, so we’ve got a lot of use out of that,” said Oviedo. “It’s going to be pretty spectacular.”

A large cube is to be installed in front of the building to represent the new name change.

“It’s kind of a connection to the subject of the dice and something that families and visitors can cherish and have memories of,” added Oviedo.

According to Oviedo, the facilities, which were over 20 years old, had to be serviced before they could be reopened to the public.

The day-to-day operations of The Cube will be handled by the American Sports Entertainment Company and the Los Angeles Kings (ASEC / Kings), who will be involved in “everything from opening front doors to issuing tickets and ice skates,” officials said.

“They will continue to conduct their operations and training at their El Segundo facility, but we have already had discussions with ASEC and the Kings about other options, including maybe bringing some of the Kings here and signing days for your favorite player who plays for the kings, ”said Oviedo. “We even talked conceptually about getting out of here and doing scrimmages.”

According to Oviedo, The Cube is currently set to open with a tape cut, which is scheduled for April 12th.

“This will be the marker point where we will really open up and make that decision as the weeks get closer to how many people can be accommodated at the facility,” said Oviedo.

City officials said they have received positive feedback from members of the community who are excited about opening the cube to the public.

“People drop by towards the end of the day every day,” said Cruz Caldera, general service manager for the city of Santa Clarita. “They’ll show up at the end of the day and take pictures and post something on social media … just because they’re so excited. Just being part of it is a reward in and of itself. “

Ice Bowl raises cash for charity

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The 24th annual Ice Bowl was held in Huntington’s Rotary Park on Saturday.

More than 144 disc golfers came out to raise funds that year, most of it in tournament history.

To practice social distancing, there was a ten-minute tee time interval and only four people per group.

“I really want to thank these golfers for being out here in 19 degrees,” said Andy Harshbarger, tournament director. “If it weren’t for them, we couldn’t do any of that.”

The event typically raises about 500 to 1,000 pounds of food to be donated to the Facing Hunger Food Bank and also raises about $ 2,500 to donate.

“It feels good to go down there and know that everyone has given.” said Harshbarger. “They love helping them and it’s a good time, especially this is the time everyone needs help and hopefully they will appreciate it.”
