Reps. Kim and Meijer introduce bill to create an independent September 11, 2001-style Afghanistan War Commission
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) and Congressman Peter Meijer (MI-03) introduced the Afghanistan War Commission Act of 2021 to create a non-partisan, independent commission to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the war in Afghanistan. The commission would need to produce a public and unclassified report with actionable recommendations so that the United States can learn from our experience in Afghanistan and be prepared for future conflicts.
“The war in Afghanistan was a state effort that – now complete – requires an independent, state-wide assessment to see what happened. This commission is vital to the future security of our country. ” said Congressman Kim. “I am proud to introduce this bipartisan law that will create an independent commission because the national security of our country should not be partisan. I am grateful for Congressman Meijer’s guidance on this matter and hope that this will be turned into law so that our country can have a full, in-depth look at the war in Afghanistan. “
The Afghanistan War Commission Act would require the commission to investigate all aspects of the war, including combat operations, intelligence operations, diplomatic activities and inter-agency coordination. The commission’s investigation would include all relevant US government agencies, including the Department of Defense, the Department of State and the intelligence community, as well as the efforts of our NATO allies.
Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) presented the accompanying draft in the Senate, which has received bipartisan support. Senator Duckworth and Senator Todd Young (R-IN) also introduced the bill as a bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2022, which is currently under Senate scrutiny.
“The war in Afghanistan was shaped by four different governments and 11 different congresses – no party should try to get cheap, party-political points from a decades-long failure of nation-building that arose across parties.” said Senator Duckworth. “Congress owes a serious, honest, long-term effort to accountability and transparency to the thousands of American soldiers who have made sacrifices in Afghanistan. I am delighted that MPs Kim and Meijer are taking the lead on my proposal in the House of Representatives so that we can set up an independent, non-partisan commission to ensure that we get out of the mistakes we have made in Afghanistan for more than 20 years , learn and reform to ensure these mistakes never happen repeatedly. “
“During my years of work on site in Afghanistan, I have seen successes and failures in the fight against terrorism. To learn from both our mistakes and our successes in this conflict, it is critical that we take a full view of all combat operations and strategic decisions from the 9/11 attacks to the disastrous withdrawal of the Biden administration. Our bill to set up a bipartisan, independent commission will ensure that the lessons of this 20-year war are absorbed and implemented in the future. ” said Congressman Meijer.
“The American people deserve an honest examination of the decision-making that led to 20 years of failed foreign policy in Afghanistan. It is of the utmost importance that we not ignore the teachings that led to our nation’s longest war – one that spanned four governments, both parties and numerous conventions. We commend Rep. Kim and Rep. Meijer, both of whom have seen firsthand the failure of US policy in Afghanistan, for their leadership and call on their colleagues in the House to support these common sense efforts. ” said Russ Duerstine, associate director of Concerned Veterans for America.
The bill is approved by Affected Veterans For America, VoteVets, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

Graphic styles can preserve your creative hard work and save you time and effort. After you’ve carefully created vector graphics with just the right fills, strokes, and effects, you can save their appearance as a graphic style and then apply that exact look to new graphics with one click. You can also explore and use styles in other Illustrator files and from the many presets included with the application. Let’s get started right away and learn how to use this great feature.
Figure 1 – The stamped ink graphic style applied to this text has 10 different appearance attributes.
Starting point – the graphic styles panel
Choose Window> Graphic Styles or press Shift + F5 to display the control panel. A graphic styles icon is also available on the right side of the Essentials Classic workspace, grouped with the Appearance panel. I prefer to tear it down and make it a floating panel.
Figure 2 – The Graphic Styles panel grouped with others in the Essentials Classic workspace
Now draw a shape and click one of the style’s thumbnails in the panel: this will instantly change the look of your shape. But the real fun is creating your own graphic styles, so let’s do that next.

Create works of art with multiple appearance attributes
I often work with text that needs to be styled in a certain way to grab attention. To do this, type in a word, choose a font, then use the direct selection tool to select the text, and you can start applying display attributes. Start by applying whatever fill and outline you want. Next, display the Appearance panel by selecting Window> Appearance or press Shift + F6 on your keyboard. Notice that the keyboard shortcuts for appearance and graphic styles are next to each other? It’s not a coincidence.
Figure 3 – The Appearance Attributes of Metal Silver Style Text
When your picture is ready, select it, drag it to the Graphic Styles panel, or click the + button at the bottom of the panel. You can also click the panel menu and choose New Graphic Style.
Figure 4 – Graphic Styles panel menu
This will create a thumbnail of your graphic style. When you drag artwork in thumbnail view onto the panel, Illustrator gives it a default name. Choose Small List View or Large List View from the panel menu to view and double-click style names to edit.
Deselect everything on your artboard by selecting Select> Deselect (Shift + Command / Ctrl + A) then type D on your keyboard to revert to Illustrator’s default fill and stroke. Draw a new shape or enter new text and click the thumbnail of your new graphic style to instantly transform the artwork.
When you apply a graphic style to editable text, the original font color is retained by default. To override this with the style’s main fill color, choose Override Character Color from the panel menu and reapply the style.
Editing graphic styles
To edit graphic styles, first apply a graphic style to an object. Edit any of the fills, strokes, or other appearance attributes of the artwork – you can easily do this in the Appearance panel. Now hold down the Option / Alt key while you drag the graphic into the Graphic Styles panel, over the thumbnail of the style you want to edit. This will update this style with the new attributes. Any artwork that the style has already been applied to is updated instantly.
To prevent style overrides, you can select your graphic and choose Unlink Graphic Style from the panel menu.
More ways to apply styles
With no graphic selected, drag one of the graphic style thumbnails from the control panel onto your artboard and hover over an object until a green + appears next to your cursor. The style is applied when you release the mouse.
Figure 5 – Drag and drop graphic style
You can also merge two styles. With stylized artwork selected, press Option / Alt and click another thumbnail to add the attributes of that graphic style to the existing one. The appearance window now shows all attributes of both styles. To merge styles without affecting the graphic, press Command / Ctrl, click two or more style thumbnails, and choose Merge Graphic Styles from the panel menu.
Loading and saving graphic styles
Explore Illustrator’s many styles by selecting Open Graphic Style Library from the panel menu or by using the library icon in the lower left corner. Explore styles in other files by selecting Open Graphics Style Library> Other Library and selecting any Illustrator document. When you apply a style from a library to your artwork, it is loaded into your document and from then on it appears in the Graphics Styles panel.
To save the styles you created for easy reuse, select Save Graphic Style Library and you will be presented with a save dialog box. Graphic style libraries are saved as normal – but empty – Illustrator files.
KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Michigan – While West Michigan continues the loss of Sgt. Ryan Proxmire, organizations and community members hope to show their support to the family by raising money for them during this difficult time.
The West Michigan community is gathering to find ways to save Sgt. Ryan Proxmire and his ultimate victim.
Two different T-shirts are already in the works, the proceeds will go to the family.
“It’s just so unfathomable that something like this would happen. I just feel so terrible for the Proxmire family and the law enforcement family, “said Laurie Smith, founder and president of the Forever Strong Memorial Foundation.
“That’s why I made it: to give back and remember and remember not just those two tragedies, but everything that will happen to our community in the future that will affect literally everyone,” said Smith.
Laurie Smith’s husband and son were both killed in one of those tragedies when an Uber driver went on a rampage across town.
Just like others for her, she has created a t-shirt that is still in the works and the proceeds of which will go to the Proxmire family.
“You are deaf for the first year and a half, two years. You will need money to comfort yourself. If they don’t feel like cooking, make sure the kids have what they need. The list goes on and on, ”said Schmied.

Mayo said she felt it was important to support those who risk their lives every day to protect everyone else.

PepsiCo and Sam Adams Brewer Boston beer work together to create an alcoholic version of Mountain Dew.
Boston Beer will develop and produce the drink called Hard Mtn Dew, while Pepsi has created a new unit for the sale, delivery and marketing of the product. The drink is slated to hit shelves in early 2022.
Hard Mtn Dew will belong to the flavored malt beverage category and contain 5% alcohol by volume. Early pictures of the products also show that they contain no sugar.
The first hint that Pepsi might move into the alcohol category came in October when Pepsi CEO Ramon Laguarta told analysts that the company would be considering the move. An announcement from the rival followed cokethat Topo Chico Hard Seltzer would make it, its first alcoholic beverage for US consumers in decades, through a partnership with Molson Coors drinks. The enterprise launched Mtn Dew Rise Energy earlier this year. According to Euromonitor, Mountain Dew holds around 7% market share in carbonated soft drinks, which puts it in fifth place.

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee is home to the largest Rohingya community in the country and the goal is to buy a building to turn it into a community center.
Meeting of Rohingya community members.
The existing church building on the 24th and Scott is a room organizer that says it fits nicely.
Andrew Trumbull, administrative director of the Burmese Rohingya community in Wisconsin, said the Rohingya had not been welcome in their home country for so long and had to flee to find refuge in a safe place.
The Rohingya come from Myanmar, also known as Burma, in Southeast Asia. The country borders India and Bangladesh.
The Rohingya people have been named the most persecuted minority in the world by the United Nations.
Trumball said this community center would serve many purposes for the Rohingya.
“It is crucial to have a place where the Rohingya can come and not have to worry about it being taken away from them,” Trumbull said.
To make this dream a reality, the remaining $ 25,000 must be raised before the May 14th closing date.
“I want for them what I have for myself, that they can have the same things that people have who look like me,” said Trumbull.
The community center will be a place where people can gather and meet their needs.
“The Rohingya have many needs and we are really looking forward to doing a lot more than we have been able to do before,” said Trumbull. “After the school program for the children. There is a small gym there, eating in the communal kitchen is always so important and a prayer room.”
Trumbull said the Rohingya and the larger Milwaukee community must make every effort to achieve the goal.

HELSINKI (AP) – A short-lived work of art with thousands of steps in the snow caught attention near the Finnish capital Helsinki.
Under the guidance of local and amateur artist Janne Pyykko, 11 snowshoe volunteers stamped a series of complex geometric patterns on a golf course. Together, the designs resemble a giant snowflake.
The work of art, which was completed in two days, has a diameter of around 160 meters. The Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat said it could be the largest snow drawing ever made in the Nordic country.
“This was an opportunity for me to develop as a person,” Pyykko, who is inspired by visual effects and has done small snow illustrations himself, told the newspaper. “I wanted to learn how to inspire people and whether I can lead them.”
Pyykko says the drawing is best seen from the air, but he told the Finnish media on Wednesday that mapping the patterns for snowshoe hikers within a designated area of the Lofkulla golf course requires a lot of ground planning.
The work should be temporary and only last until the next snowfall or strong winds erase the footprints.

While most experts don’t think negative interest rates are likely, the fund industry has recently begun explaining to regulators what to do just in case.
Reverse Distributions – a paradoxical term that sounds almost like Orwellian, like “war is peace” – is exactly what the Investment Company Institute, a fund trading group, describes a December report over Money market capital. The report was designed to address concerns that US money funds, after deducting their fees, cannot deliver even zero returns in a negative interest rate environment – as was the case in Europe since 2014.
How can distributions that you are supposed to receive work the other way around? The ICI paper describes a process in which, instead of an income payment, a reverse distribution mechanism or RDM “a [constant net asset value or] Negative return of the CNAV money market fund due to cancellation of shares in shareholder accounts. It offsets the negative return accrued daily (ie a decrease in the fund’s net assets) by reducing the number of fund shares outstanding. This process enables the Fund to maintain a constant Net Asset Value per Share, typically $ 1.00. “
In Europe, reverse distributions are referred to as much less appealing but simpler “stock destruction” or “stock cancellation”. These terms describe exactly what will happen.
The US $ 1 net asset value has been inviolable to retail investors in US money market funds since its inception in 1971, so investors can think of money market funds as bank accounts even though they are not insured nationwide. The few cases where money market funds have “broken the money” have been during times of extreme market stress. The last case was the decline in the Reserve Primary Fund to 97 cents in 2008 due to the Lehman brother’s bankruptcy.
RDMs create the illusion that investors are not losing money by maintaining the net asset value of $ 1 while the number of stocks goes down. However, the purpose is not to mislead investors, but rather to prevent the Net Asset Value from falling due to fees and falling returns in an environment with negative interest rates below $ 1. “In the current [zero interest rate] Surroundings, [money funds] waive more than half of their fees, ”said Peter Crane, president of money fund tracker Crane Data. “So instead of charging [0.28%], they are charging [0.13%] for now.”
Some money managers say that maintaining a net asset value of $ 1 even when the number of stocks goes down is easier for brokers selling funds to keep track of when they are depositing and withdrawing cash each day. “When you sweep [cash] At the end of each day, developing a stable net asset value product is pretty easy because it only costs one dollar to one dollar, ”said Deborah Cunningham, CIO of Global Liquidity Markets at Federated Hermes, who manages and carried $ 433 billion in marketable assets contributes to the ICI report along with other money market managers. “With this sweep mechanism, there are no computations of stocks versus price, whereas pretty much any other mechanism would require computations of stocks versus price.”
However, there is also a psychological dimension to getting the NAV of $ 1 instead of floating or “floating” it like a normal stock or bond fund. “Our investors want a constant NAV solution,” said Jeff Weaver, senior portfolio manager who oversees money market funds valued at approximately $ 200 billion Wells Fargo
Asset Management, which also contributed to the ICI report. “You don’t want a floating net asset value.”
However, institutional municipal debt and premium money market funds already have a floating net asset value that can drop below $ 1 as a result a 2016 regulatory change. According to Weaver, Wells Fargo’s institutional clients want this not to be the case: “Clients in money market funds are trying to get the capital. If a net asset value fluctuates, there is a possibility that you will lose capital. “
Weaver compares the ICI’s report on RDMs to a “contingency plan” because the likelihood of negative interest rates in the US is “very small”. While the Treasury bills briefly fell into the negative yield territory during the pandemic crash last marchThe US has been in recovery mode since then.
However, the coronavirus remains an economic wildcard. The Federal Reserve Bank “said they didn’t want to go negative, but they never say never,” says Crane. “They’re getting another big shock to the economy, pushing us back down, and suddenly negative rates and deflation could be possible again.”
There could also be regulatory hurdles for RDMs. When European interest rates turned negative in 2014, some funds like the BlackRock ICS Euro Government were Liquidity Fund busy RDMswhich the ICI’s RDM design is similar to. Ultimately, EU regulators banned RDMs in 2018and said they weren’t “compatible“Had to use existing regulations and resources Changeover to floating NAVs.
If the RDM scenario is unlikely in 2021, why did the ICI publish a detailed report in late 2020? One reason was to make the RDM case public. The ICIs are issuing this not only for the people in the industry and their customers, but also for the regulators themselves to improve understanding [RDMs] could work, ”says Weaver. The other was customer concern. “The negative interest issue has been so persistent from the start of last year [of the pandemic crisis] In March you couldn’t have a conversation with a customer or colleague without discussing it [it]. ”
If RDMs were to take place, training investors would certainly be a challenge. “This is something that would be new to most investors, especially retail investors,” affirmed Jeff Naylor, director of operations and distribution for the ICI. “We highlight in the paper the need for a communication strategy for both the funds and the intermediaries.”
One thing that could help clear things up is not to refer to them as RDMs, but instead share the destruction. That would be less Orwellian.
WHITEHOUSE, Ohio (WTVG) – Nature’s Nursery Center for Wildlife Rescue is one of many local nonprofits that has seen donations drop sharply due to the pandemic. In 2020 the organization brought in a record number of over 4,000 animals, exceeding its previous 31 years by over 600 animal photos. With personal fundraisers still going on due to the pandemic, Nature’s Nursery is thinking beyond an online auction of art made from their own animals.
“Since personal events have to take a back seat to hide, we have come up with different ways to do things virtually,” said General Manager Allison Schroeder. “Our animals usually do programs in schools and since schools are closed they couldn’t. That was not only a fun way to raise some money for Nature’s Nursery, but also to use the teaching animals and give them an enrichment. “
The non-profit organization uses tails, claws, and turtles as tools for creating paintings. The kindergarten staff let selected outgoing animals scurry through paints and canvases. The art that is then created is sold to raise money for the animal rehabilitation center. The animal artists are educational ambassadors at Nature’s Nursery, who all have restrictions that prevent them from being released back into the wild. Paintings were created by Greta the Opossum, Lefty the Eastern Box Turtle, Sage the Gray Rat Snake, Martin the Mallard, and Einstein the Eastern Screech School. All finished artwork will be for auction from February 1st to 5th.
“When we started it was 159 animals and is now approaching 4,000 for the last year. It really has grown into something that the community really needs,” said co-founder Laura Zitzelberger. “We’ve always relied on strangers to be kind, so these types of fundraisers make all the difference in the world when fundraisers can be this difficult.”
