Artwork Basel Hong Kong and Eurovision deliver the worldwide arts scene again

With two major cultural events last weekend, the international art scene signaled that it does not intend to have Covid cancel another year.

Held May 19-23, Art Basel Hong Kong marked the return of one of the most revered art fairs in the world. The show followed Frieze New York, which happened earlier this month and was the first major art fair in New York since the pandemic began.

After a one-year hiatus, the extremely popular Eurovision Song Contest also returned to Europe. The competition took place May 18-22 and, according to the show’s organizers, was watched by nearly 200 million viewers, including a live audience of 3,500 people.

After large gatherings around the globe were canceled for more than a year, both events mark a significant step forward on the path to normalcy after the pandemic and highlight the different methods Asia and Europe are using to achieve this goal.

Art Basel Hong Kong becomes “hybrid”

With its first show in more than a year, Art Basel returned to the world stage after canceling its three annual shows last year – Hong Kong in March, its flagship show in Basel, Switzerland in June, and Miami Beach (Florida) in December.

All three events are back this year with the first Art Basel Hong Kong, which will present a “hybrid” format that allows participants to appear virtually or in person.

Art Basel Hong Kong 2021, which was relocated from March to May, made its debut in a “hybrid” trade fair format.

Private collectors from more than 30 countries and territories took part in “virtual tours” of the fair, which was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. More than 100 galleries participated, with many joining through satellite booths that allowed gallery owners to interact with attendees without traveling to Hong Kong.

“After we had designed our booth plan for the fair, the gallery delivered all of the artwork to Hong Kong to be installed by the Art Basel team, as in previous years,” said Valerie Carberry, partner at Gray. Chicago, New York. “Since we couldn’t travel to Hong Kong to attend the fair ourselves, Art Basel appointed us a booth assistant who took care of the booth in our place.”

The gallery planned video meetings ahead of the show to prepare the assistant, who, according to Carberry, “was incredibly professional … we felt well represented”.

Participants could also view collections Online viewing roomsthat Art Basel launched last year. Online rooms of the canceled exhibition in Hong Kong in 2020 showed works from more than 230 galleries and, according to Art Basel, attracted around 250,000 visitors.

“We all wanted to be there in person, of course, but the ability to share real-time information with customers at your booth was as close as ever to an in-person pandemic art fair,” said Carberry.

“We all felt a bit ‘jet lagged’ after we did not travel, but it was worth telling our Hong Kong customers how much we value their business and the support of our program.”

The Eurovision Song Contest is back

The cancellation of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, or Eurovision for short, may have resulted in this year’s competition reaching its largest audience since 2016.

In the singing competition that began in 1956, musical acts from predominantly European countries compete against each other, with 26 reaching the grand finals. The country that produces the winning act hosts the next competition.

This year, the Italian rock group Maneskin won the main prize and made sure that the competition will take place in Italy in 2022.

The show was largely a face-to-face event with most of the attendees performing live from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Australian Montaigne performed over a taped shot due to their inability to travel to Europe. This was a first in the show’s 65-year history.

Participants wore masks and followed social distancing mandates. According to Eurovision, the participants were subjected to regular Covid tests and isolated in their hotel rooms unless they were exercising.

The show also limited the number of live viewers present. Still, the 3,500 people who watched in person were enough to make Eurovision one of the largest live entertainment events in Europe since the beginning of the pandemic in 2021.

The annual competition, which casts a spell over Europe but is largely unknown to American audiences, is slated to launch in the US next year on NBC. According to the Eurovision website, artists from 50 states, five US territories and Washington, DC will compete in the “American Song Contest” for the title of the best original song.

What’s coming?

With the exception of Art Dubai, which began in late March 2021, most of the major international art exhibitions that were originally supposed to take place before May have been canceled. These include Frieze Los Angeles and Dutch Tefaf Maastricht, both of which were postponed before being canceled.

The Art Basel fairs in Basel and Miami Beach are back in the books, although the Switzerland show has been postponed from June to September in order to “visit as broad an international audience as possible,” according to the fair’s website.

Another top international art fair, Frieze London, is slated to return in October.

It is expected that these fairs will be very personally attended. According to Marc Spiegler, the global director of Art Basel, the digital components of Art Basel will be retained.

“We have developed a whole range of techniques and tactics for people to access a gallery program digitally,” he told the New York Times. “The pandemic has enabled us to do a better job for the collectors who cannot attend.”

The next Eurovision competition is planned for May 2022. Details have not yet been confirmed. Online speculation on dates and locations has begun.

Hong Kong is also pushing high-profile plans that align with the city’s conservative approach to curbing Covid. In line with its nickname as the “Art Capital of Asia”, the city will host a number of art festivals and exhibitions, including the contemporary art exhibition “Ink City” and the French May Arts Fest with around 80 events across the city in June.

This year, a new visual arts museum is due to open in Hong Kong’s new “T” -shaped M + building.

The Hong Kong Ballet will play Romeo + Juliet next month after the show was canceled last summer.

Hong Kong is new M + building will host one of the largest museums of contemporary visual culture in the world. The “T-shaped” museum has an area of 65,000 square meters, including 33 galleries, three cinemas, a research center, restaurants, a tea and coffee bar, a members’ lounge and a roof garden with a view of Victoria Harbor.

The museum is slated to open this year.

Tacos Carry Lengthy Seaside Collectively For Competition | Leisure

For a fun-loving city used to big festivals attended by thousands of people, it’s been a long, tough, and quiet year after all major live events were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Finally, there’s a festival returning to Long Beach this month, but it’s not one of the big multi-tiered music events that can claim to be the first back.

No, that honor goes to the humble taco.

The first Long Beach Taco Festival is the first festival in town since the pandemic lockdown began in March 2020.

The one-day event will take place in the Long Beach Scottish Rite parking lot on Sunday, May 23rd, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

“I’m so excited that we’ll be listening to live music, eating and being outside, and it’s going to be a good time,” said Elizabeth Martinez, general manager of Long Beach Home + Living, which, along with The Long Beach Convention Center, does Scottish Rite and Roxannes Cocktail Lounge organize the festival.

“I just hope everyone is comfortable, welcome, and excited about something like this,” she said.

“And who doesn’t love tacos?” She added.

About 750 people are expected at the festival, including nearly a dozen taco vendors, trucks, and restaurants setting up stalls to sell their tacos.

So far, food trucks like Mini Birrieria and Bryan’s Birria have been on the list of foods that will serve their versions of the Mexican meat stew. Other trucks like Savage Tacos serve jerk chicken and wonton tacos, while the pop-up Junkies LBC Vegan Tacos serve plant-based options.

Brick-and-mortar restaurants like La Chancla in Long Beach and El Barrio Neighborhood Tacos in Westside will also be bringing some of their tacos to the festival. More providers and restaurants will be added in the next few days.

And do you remember live music at festivals?

Well, that’s back too with a range of lively cumbia, salsa, and other Latin music pulled from a handful of acts including Spaghetti Cumbia from Boyle Heights calling themselves little cumbia, little cowboy. and Los Surlys, which is more of a groovy type of cumbia band.

But yes, there is still a pandemic. So don’t expect to grab a taco and jump into a cumbia dance pit without worrying about the world because there are safety rules.

“People need to get out there and have fun, but of course we follow safety protocols and guidelines. It’s just the new way of doing things to make sure people feel safe. But when we bring festivals back, we return to a certain.” Back to normal, “he told Robert Molina, owner of Roxannes Cocktail Lounge.

There will be temperature controls on the door, masks will be needed inside and once people get their tacos and drinks they will have to go to a separate seating area where they can relax and listen to live music.

“But festivals are back and the tacos did it,” said Molina.

Tinkers & Timbers deliver distinctive leisure – The Parthenon

Local entertainment center Ticker and woods, known for its ax-throwing cabins and escape rooms, is gearing up for new events and additions to the business, including spring and summer ax-throwing leagues and a black-light room for paint splatter.

Tonya Perry, co-owner of Tickers and Timbers in Barboursville, said the company recently launched its eight-week spring ax throwing league. Participants compete with ax throwers around the world. According to Perry, Tickers and Timbers is the only ax-throwing facility within a three-hour drive to offer the competition.

Tonya Perry and co-owner Jerry Lawson realized that the Huntington and Barboursville areas needed something recreational that was different from what other local businesses were offering. (Courtesy Tinkers & Timbers)

“A lot of venues like this one have axes for fun,” Perry said. “Of course we do that too, but people who are interested in ax throwing as a competitive sport can join our league. Our spring league has just started and our summer league is a couple of weeks away. “

Perry said she got the idea to start the entertainment center after the pandemic affected her 18-year career as a therapist. She said she and co-owner Jerry Lawson noticed that the Huntington and Barboursville areas needed something recreational that was different from what other local businesses were offering. So the two of them decided to build tickers and sticks.

“I’m a single mom and I had to find something else,” said Perry. “I live here and so do the other owner, and we always said there was nothing to be done here. That’s why we created this facility, and we want to do more with it. “

According to Perry, the company offers two escape room options for guests: one themed Area 51 and one called Mothman Mystery. Perry said the Mothman Room was her idea, and Lawson built the room after designing it.

Perry said while the pandemic may have discouraged business when it opened, it has grown in popularity.

“Business started slowly,” said Perry. “We opened on Black Friday and we didn’t do a lot of business with COVID, but we keep growing every week. Last weekend we were sold out, our escape rooms and our axes. We are usually fully booked on weekends. “

Tickers & Timbers offers a variety of unique entertainment options. (Courtesy Tinkers & Timbers)

Perry said she and Lawson encourage guests to come in during the week when business is less busy. Perry said they are offering a $ 20 per person special on Thursdays for the ax throwing cabins or escape rooms to encourage visiting on a weekday.

Perry said she hopes to grow the business into a full recreational facility. She hopes to be able to open the “Splash of Color” room in the next week or two, where guests can splash neon paint into a room lit by black light. They will partially use the space for events such as gender unveiling parties.

Perry said she also wanted to add a “party room” for birthday parties for guests six and older. Perry said children must be 12 years or older to throw axes but only six years or older for the escape rooms so families can have fun together.

Denmark’s Nielsen excited to deliver athletic, aggressive type to CFL

TORONTO – Steven Nielsen grew up in Denmark and played a number of sports such as soccer and handball, but he also didn’t like to play. Then came football and everything changed.

His brother started playing and after watching him for a year, Nielsen decided to immerse himself in himself.

“I just fell in love with the sport,” said Nielsen. “I was finally able to use my size and my aggressiveness. Then, as I continued to play, I fell more and more in love with the sport and learned the various techniques, games, schemes and the like. “

Nielsen played at club level for a few years for fun. But at the age of 17 he started looking for schools in the US to make a career out of the sport he loved.

The offensive lineman Steven Nielsen was able to successfully switch from Denmark to the NCAA. (Athletics in Eastern Michigan)

He ended up in Indiana at La Lumiere High School, where he was able to switch to an NCAA program.

“It was difficult, more on a personal basis, just to be that far from my family,” he said. “Practice too. We practiced at home twice a week, and when I was in prep school we practiced every day and exercised in the morning. So there was a lot more training and football during the day than I was used to. That was a big transition and it helped me prepare for college.

Nielsen eventually signed up to play Eastern Michigan, where he would spend his entire college career. He says it felt like home as soon as he walked onto campus.

During his time with the Eagles, the 6-foot-8, 307-pounder played across the offensive line. He originally played tackle coming up but was used as a freshman on the left. He played the correct tackle in his sophomore and sophomore years before the team moved him again, this time to leave the tackle for his senior season.

While moving around so often has been a challenge, Nielsen has also learned immensely from those opportunities and says he is better off now.

His final college season was in 2019. After leaving Eastern Michigan, Nielsen was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an unoccupied free agent. Unfortunately he has been cut and trained since then.

Nielsen has always been a fan of the CFL game and last year he was looking into the possibility of going to the Global Combine but he was still focused on the NFL and not participating. However, this year he will be looking to make it north of the border and is looking forward to the chance to qualify for one of the nine CFL franchises.

“That would be huge,” said Nielsen of the prospect of being drafted. “Just for the development of football in Denmark, just to have another professional player. I think it is a great opportunity to keep that notoriety for the Danish players so that young people feel that it is possible. No matter where it is, you can play professional football. “

As a big body who can play across the board – not to mention occupying a global spot on a CFL roster in a key position like the offensive line – Nielsen should be able to do what he learned in college to bring in and expand his skills once he’s come to Canada.

“On the field you would get a very athletic, tall man who can move and knows how to take blockers and dominate people,” said Nielsen. “As a team player, you get someone who is very motivating and hardworking, and someone who is always there for your teammates.

“… I enjoy run blocking the most because you can beat someone. Pass blocking, you need to be a little more patient. But even in college, I liked to take the aggressiveness to pass the block. I used to go straight for guys. I now understand that this will be a little more difficult because they are a little further away from me now. But hopefully I can bring this aggressiveness to the passing game. “

deliver cozy Danish hygge model into your own home | Dwelling & Backyard

Aktualisieren Sie Ihr Home Office

All indications also suggest that she may be featured in the upcoming Secret Invasion series, which will also air on Disney +. Most of all, the fans knew Monica as Geraldine.

Parris was introduced as one of Wanda’s new friends in Westview, New Jersey. Even though the twist was spoiled and fans knew who was playing Parris the whole time, their journey in WandaVision was still exciting. Monica seemed to hold her own as she faced both SWORD director Tyler Hayward and their development of forces travel from her several times through the border of the hex. There’s no denying that Parris has served up some really iconic looks throughout the series. With its contemporary costumes up into the modern era, Parris and the rest of the cast looked gorgeous. This aspect is especially important for a show like WandaVision that it’s on Characters travel through the decades. Each episode had to look absolutely unique while mimicking the iconic styles for an entire ten-year period.

Fortunately, WandaVision’s stylists did it, and it’s nice to see Parris thank them on their Instagram. They are just as important to a production as writers and directors in bringing the bigger picture together, but they can also be forgotten to praise other aspects of the production. WandaVision however, it is different. The character’s style changed not only in pretty much every episode, but also Westview themselves, from the houses to the cars on the street and the interiors. The stylists, set designers and production designers achieved something amazing with Marvel’s first original series and deserve as much praise as everyone else involved.

Little one tax credit score 2021 approval may convey extra money than stimulus checks. What to know

Families with children in need of money may see help soon.

CNET

After this past the Senate on Saturday President Joe Bidens $ 1.9 trillion relief plan is back in the House to vote – which is likely to take place Wednesday mornings – and is then sent to Biden for signature. Americans should know if this is the end of the week You will be eligible for the third stimulus check of up to $ 1,400, extended unemployment benefits and more money from the child tax credit.

Currently, the COVID-19 relief bill is increasing the existing child tax credit (CTC) up to $ 3,600 per child – that’s more than double $ 1,400 per dependent on stimulus check. It would also allow families to receive the funds “regularly” rather than annually during the tax season. This increase in the CTC would reduce child poverty by 40%, according to a Report from the Center for Budgetary and Policy Priorities.

Here’s what you need to know about the CTC, including the qualification requirements for you and your children, how much money you could get, and what could change before it becomes law. (Here is every way Nurses can benefit from a new bill.)

What exactly is the Child Tax Credit?

On a basic level, the child tax credit is a loan that parents and caregivers can get to help reduce theirs Tax assessment, depending on the number and age of their relatives. For many, it can be a much needed source of relief as part of a Refund for the 2020 tax year.

The CTC is currently a $ 2,000 parenting loan Taxes for every child under 17 years of age (the same age range for Child addicts that was used for the first and second Stimulus checks). And if this loan exceeds the amount of Taxes a family actually owesParents can still get a refund of up to $ 1,400 of the balance. This is technically referred to as Child Additional Tax Credit or Refundable CTC. For example, a couple with children ages 5, 10, and 12 would receive a total of $ 6,000 in child tax credit – unless they do a refund is dueIn that case, they would get $ 4,200.

Biden’s plan will temporarily increase the amount from $ 2,000 to $ 3,600 per child under 6 and $ 3,000 for children over 6. The balance is also fully refundable and there would be no income floor of $ 2,500. Also, the plan would allow families to receive funds as monthly payments from July 2021 through December 2021 instead of a flat rate as part of a tax refund.

How do I know if I am eligible for the Child Tax Credit?

Families with children under the age of 6 would receive up to $ 3,600 per child under the new price COVID relief bill. Families with children under the age of 17 receive $ 3,000 credit per child. Families with older children are also eligible: they can claim $ 500 for each child aged 17-18, or for full-time students aged 19-24.

The tax credit applies to children who are considered to be related to you and who live with you for at least six months a year.

Note that higher income families may receive a reduced loan, although the eligibility requirements are relatively broad. Married couples who jointly file with an Adjusted Gross Income less than $ 400,000 are eligible for the full amount, as are people with one AGI under $ 200,000.

Other ways the child tax credit would change with the new relief bill

In addition to new qualifications and payment amounts, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 would expand the tax credit so that:

  • The credit will be fully refunded.
  • There would be no dollar cap and income constraints preventing many low-income families and children from getting full credit Center for budget and political priorities.
  • Payments would be sent monthly over the course of a year from July through December 2021 instead of once during tax season.

The bill would too Expand other child-related credits Families could claim up to half of their childcare costs on their taxes.

For the bottom 20% of families in terms of income, the proposed expansion of the CTC would increase income by an average of 9.7% – even higher if you only consider accountants with children, they say Institute for Taxes and Economic Policy. The proposal would also lift 4.1 million children above the poverty line and reduce the number of children in poverty by more than 40%, according to the Center for Budgetary and Policy Priorities.

Is the child tax credit based on my 2019 or 2020 taxes?

It would probably depend on it. The IRS is tasked with basing your eligibility for the child tax credit on yours Tax return 2020if this has been processed by the first July payment. Otherwise – in the case of a Extension of the tax returnExample: The agency would use your 2019 taxes to determine the amount owed.

How long does the new child tax credit last? Is it permanent?

The child tax credit for 2021 is considered temporary reparation for the year and would only apply through 2021. Changes to a CTC for 2022 would have to be made in a separate invoice.

Cell orchestra tries to convey cheer to Venezuelan streets | Arts & Leisure

BARQUISIMETO, Venezuela (AP) – Orchestral music envelops the streets of a Venezuelan city every time a truck loaded with musicians drives through traffic last year, attracting the attention of drivers and passers-by who take photos and stare at the vehicle. The live performance is an attempt to give people a little break from the coronavirus pandemic and other hardships.

On a hot afternoon that week, the musicians climbed onto the platform of the truck and began playing with face masks as they traveled through Barquisimeto, a town west of the capital, Caracas. Her instruments included a cello, violins, and even a Steinway & Sons grand piano.

“Music can not only entertain us, it can also transform us, heal us and soothe our emotions,” said José Agustín Sánchez, a Venezuelan pianist, composer and conductor who started the initiative.

Before the show began, Sanchez reminded the musicians that their upcoming performance was a “musical disinfection” that could provoke a range of emotions in them and their audience. He told them to be ready to be yelled at, but also to see someone clap and cry.

The tour started in front of a medical school next to a hospital. Sanchez was conducting the mobile orchestra from his piano as the musicians were sweating under the midday sun. The orchestra played for hours many of the tunes he wrote as the composer for the Caracas Municipal Symphony Orchestra.

In Venezuela, more than 140,900 infections and 1,364 deaths have been confirmed from COVID-19. Experts believe the low number of cases compared to other countries in the region such as Brazil, Colombia and Peru is largely due to the isolation Venezuela has experienced for years due to a political, economic and social crisis.

Barquisimeto is also known as Venezuela’s “City of Music” as it is the hometown of several musical instrument manufacturers, musicians and composers in the country, including Gustavo Dudamel, the music and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the USA, one of today’s great conductors.

Sanchez, 31, returned to Venezuela in 2017 after almost 11 years abroad. His travels took him to Tibet and Nepal, where, after several months of “exploring peace from the sound”, he decided to return to his affected country to deliver a message of unity.

He was out and about in Venezuela during the pandemic, playing on pickups, but also in medical facilities treating patients with COVID-19. His Instagram account contains videos of Sanchez wearing personal protective equipment from head to toe and playing the piano alongside patients and healthcare workers.

“It’s a worthy show, it’s beautiful,” said Zulay Chirinos Mariño, a 60-year-old Barquisimeto resident. “I have goosebumps.”

Associate press photographer Ariana Cubillos and writers Jorge Rueda from Caracas, Venezuela, and Regina Garcia Cano from Mexico City contributed to this report.

Bankers Life facility VP works to deliver key leisure to Indy – WISH-TV | Indianapolis Information | Indiana Climate

Celebrate women’s history

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The sports arena is often viewed as a male domain, but as the vice president for running facilities for Pacers Sports & EntertainmentMel Raines proves that it’s a women’s world as well.

In the past few years she has played a major role in some of the biggest sporting events in Indy. Raines has a long political background. From the Super Bowl to March Madness and helping Indianapolis win the bid for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game, Indiana can keep up, she says.

“I mean, we’re known as a great promoter and I think (what) we’re going to start in March is just another example of that,” said Raines. “No other city has hosted every game in the NCAA tournament, and we’re excited to be a big part of it here. We’ll probably have 16 games between the first and second round and the sweet 16. “

Raines is behind much of the work to make sure the city seizes opportunities. After a dozen years in politics, she was part of several political teams: former US Senator Dan Coats, former US Representative Susan Brooks, and former Vice President Dick Cheney.

“You know, politics was a great backdrop for that. There are a lot of parallels I would say. They know we work for an NBA team, but we work for the Simon family, ”said Raines.

In 1983, Simon and his brother Mel, who died in 2009, bought the Pacers. Herb continues to own the Pacers and is retired chairman of Indianapolis-based mall developer Simon Property Group.

“Working for an office, but you really work for a person or a family, and it was very much like working in politics. In politics things change every day and here things change every day. Even when we’re working in a non-COVID environment, we’re always making last-minute changes, ”said Raines.

Bankers Life Fieldhouse is in the middle of a $ 360 million renovation. Interior decoration is done on seating, concessions, and more. Ultimately, a pavilion extension and exterior improvements will be made. Raines is also one of the many who make sure that everything is taken care of.

“This town is made up of an army of volunteers, both young and some more experienced, who really get the whole engine going.”

Raines said it was a tough job and she was here to do it.

“You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, but when you work the hardest you can do it really well.”

Raines said that with March Madness this month, Pacers Sports & Entertainment is constantly looking for improvement. In the meantime, it is preparing to host another number of major sporting events in the years to come. If the coronavirus pandemic allows, there are plans to make the All-Star Game in 2024 in a way the NBA has never had.
