Report: Georgia company wasted cash seized from taxpayers | State Information

ATLANTA (AP) – State inspectors and an investigation found that a Georgia agency illegally withheld millions of dollars in seized funds and spent money on Fitbits, exercise equipment, and other items.

A department of the Treasury also spent money on engraved firearms and stress balls in the form of beer mugs. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Tuesday’s Bureau of Inspector General’s report confirmed last year’s coverage by the newspaper and WSB-TV detailing how the money seized from tax investigations was spent by the Treasury Department’s Special Investigations Office.

The spending by the Treasury Department’s investigative department was “clearly wasteful” and “gave the appearance of extravagance,” the report said.

The department has since changed its policy and returned money to the state treasury where it should have gone, the newspaper reported.

Finance Commissioner Robyn Crittenden, who took over the department in July, promised further reforms.

“The department is actively moving forward to ensure that the results highlighted in this report are addressed,” Crittenden said Tuesday.

“We are focused on the Treasury Department’s mission to promote public trust and compliance while providing excellent customer service,” added Crittenden. “We are committed to doing what is right consistently and serving Georgia taxpayers with integrity and accountability.”

The Inspector General’s investigation began after receiving complaints from an attorney representing reality show personalities Todd and Julie Chrisley, whose 2014 TV show “Chrisley Knows Best” made its debut. Her attorney Chris Anulewicz had filed a complaint against the Office of Special Investigations last year.

Athletes First reps lead company checklist with $2 billion in NFL contracts

Athletes First is the top sports agency with around $ 2 billion in contracts for 75 active professional footballers, according to a new study of high-earning agents among well-known and accredited National Football League player representatives.

Athlete’s first agent Todd France tops the list, with around $ 1.19 billion in contracts negotiated between 33 active NFL players. David Mulugheta is also on the list with 42 NFL players and $ 830 million in deals. Together, the two have negotiated just over $ 2 billion in active agreements for Athletes First.

The winning data was compiled by the digital sports betting platform Pickswise in cooperation with the global marketing agency ICS-digital. The companies used active NFL player contract information through Spotrac.com, which collects data on teams and player contracts. The study only collected deals from high profile reps and finds that NFL agents receive up to 3% commission on NFL deals. Using this percentage, France has estimated that more than $ 35 million was earned from active contracts.

Athletes First has negotiated over $ 4 billion in sports contracts, earning approximately $ 85 million in commissions Forbes. But this earnings study did not include contracts for players who were retiring or terminated, nor contracts that have expired.

One of the most famous active NFL deals is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who signed a six-year deal for $ 258 million last month. Allen’s average annual contract value is $ 43 million per season, ranking second only to Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs star signed a 10 year old $ 450 million deal with an average annual value of $ 45 million per season.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott also used Athletes First to secure his $ 160 million four-year deal. Prescott has chosen to sign a shorter-term contract that will allow him to benefit from a higher salary cap upon his re-entry as the NFL’s $ 100 billion media rights deal will add to the league’s total revenue. The current NFL media deal helped the teams raise approximately $ 309 million each.

The NFL is a high risk of injury sport and most teams do not guarantee player contracts due to the high injury rate. Agents are pushing back on it by seeking as much guaranteed money as possible, including signing bonuses.

If you just take guaranteed money into account, Allen’s deal at $ 150 million is the highest in the NFL. Mahomes’ deal includes a guaranteed $ 141 million, and Prescott ranks third with $ 126 million.

Tom Condon from the high-performing Creative Artists Agency has Allen as a client after taking over for France left CAA in 2020. Condon ranks second in the results study with 24 active NFL players and around $ 954 million in contracts. His commission from the agreements is approximately $ 28 million and the client list includes Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Matt Ryan.

Mulugheta ranks third with $ 24 million in commissions, including the deal he negotiated for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, a four-year contract valued at $ 156 million -Dollars guaranteed).

Up-and-coming agents who aren’t in the top ten include Zeke Sandhu of Elite Athlete Management and Wasserman’s Doug Hendrickson ($ 10 million in commissions) and Chafie Fields (around $ 5 million in commissions) of $ 158 million active deals.

Fields recently Pittsburgh Steelers star added JuJu Smith-Schuster and negotiated a $ 100 million deal for Cowboys Wideout-Amari Cooper deal. Cooper’s deal is the highest in the NFL for a wide receiver.

This article has been updated to reflect Josh Allen’s current agency.

NFL agent Andy Simms strikes on from Younger Cash, will get again to working his personal company

Andy Simms has spent most of his career as an NFL agent running his own agency.

The Hawken High School graduate and resident of Solon is doing just that again after he and four of his colleagues parted ways with Young Money and formed APAA Sports 1 of 1 agency.

Young Money, owned by renowned rapper Lil Wayne, acquired a majority stake in PlayersRep Sports Management in 2017. PlayersRep, which Simms co-founded with Wesley Spencer, had been in the business since 1999. Then Simms’ first client, former NFL defender Chike Okeafor, became about to graduate from Fall Western Reserve University’s law school.

In early 2018, after Simms and five other PlayersRep agents partnered with Young Money, Simms told Crain’s that “the ability to build our clients’ brands” was a primary reason for the move. However, the past few years have encouraged Simms that his group had to be in charge.

“There were things that were great, but there were things that we realized we could do better,” said Simms of his time at Young Money. “Ultimately, I knew that in order to build a company for the next 10 years we were looking ahead, building it our way, doing things the way we needed to, and being in control of all these aspects of our business, really is what we need back to. “

Six agents switched from PlayersRep to Young Money. Five – Simms, Spencer, Ken Sarnoff, Cody Recchion and Dave Lee – will continue to represent the 50 NFL players who move from Young Money to 1 of 1. Nicole Lynn, who was also part of the PlayersRep and Young Money teams, left Wayne’s company shortly before the NFL draft to join Klutch Sports as the agency’s new president of the agency’s football operations.

Marketing and branding the athletes they represent – crucial elements that led to the young money deal – are still important areas that need improvement, Simms said.

“At 1 in 1, we were able to assemble a team with more in-house marketing options, more digital graphics, and more off-field opportunities to help players in so many different ways that we weren’t equipped to do.” do either as PlayersRep or as Young Money, “said Simms.

The great thing about the new agency is that all the athletes have moved with the five agents.

The group includes Jalen Hurts, a sophomore quarterback who could be the Philadelphia Eagles’ future in that position; Lane Johnson, three-time Pro Bowl tackle for the Eagles; the McCourty twins Devin and Jason; Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller; outstanding wide receiver Tyler Boyd; Kansas City Chiefs Speedster Mecole Hardman; and Chiefs Defensive Lineman Jarran Reed.

“Business was good before Young Money, it was good when we were with Young Money, and now that we’ve moved on from Young Money, it’s getting even better,” said Simms. “The business of what we do as agents – how we look after the players, how we deal with the contracts, how we meet all of the needs of the players off the field – that’s just something we have to keep improving at, we’re coming Ahead.”

U.S. well being company casts doubts over knowledge

LONDON – A US health department said so on Tuesday AstraZeneca Outdated information may have been included in the test results of the Covid-19 vaccine, which may cast doubts on the published efficacy rates.

It comes just a day after the results of a large U.S. study showed the vaccine was safe and highly effective, and questions whether AstraZeneca can apply for U.S. approval for the vaccine as planned next month.

The Data Safety Monitoring Board “was concerned that AstraZeneca may have included out of date information from this study that may provide an incomplete view of the efficacy data,” according to the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said in a statement.

“We urge the company to work with the DSMB to review efficacy data and ensure that the most accurate and up-to-date efficacy data is released as soon as possible.”

NIAID was notified of the concern late Monday along with AstraZeneca and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Under the direction of the White House Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the NIAID is part of the National Institutes of Health.

On Monday, the US test results showed that the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University is 79% effective in preventing symptomatic illness and 100% effective against serious illness and hospitalization.

The results were called “surprisingly positive“and” good news for the world community. “It was believed that the experimental data could help increase public confidence in the shot and move it one step closer to US emergency clearance.

AstraZeneca did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.

AstraZeneca’s shares fell 0.7% in London on Tuesday.

US criticism

AstraZeneca said it plans to prepare the primary analysis, which will be submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency approval before mid-April.

Data from the late-stage human study was based on more than 32,000 volunteers at 88 trial centers in the United States, Peru, and Chile.

The Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine had been temporarily suspended in several countries after blood clots were reported in some people who had been vaccinated. Health experts sharply criticized the move, citing a lack of data, while analysts expressed concerns about the impact on vaccine uptake as the virus continues to spread.

AstraZeneca said Monday that the independent DSMB had not found an increased risk of blood clots.

Ruud Dobber, executive vice president of AstraZeneca’s biopharmaceuticals business, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Monday that it was “very gratifying to see that the Data Safety Monitoring Board, even with a magnifying glass, is not an imbalance between the vaccinated group and the vaccinated group the placebo group. “

“That gives us a lot of confidence,” he added.

The European Medicines Agency said earlier this month that its first investigation into possible side effects found the shot to be safe and effective, with the benefits still outweighing the risks.

The World Health Organization and the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis have recommended that countries continue to use the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

AstraZeneca at the end of last year Exposed to criticism from US health professionals about the results and methods of their Phase 3 vaccine studies. Analysts at the US health and biotech investment bank SVB Leerink said at the time that the vaccine “would never be approved in the US”.

AstraZeneca backed out of criticism, saying the studies “were conducted to the highest standards” and that more data would follow.

Cash & the Regulation: Look to client safety company to show up the warmth | Enterprise

The Bureau for Financial Consumer Protection is about to change the guard. (The real name is the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, but nobody calls it that.)

President Joe Biden has named Rohit Chopra to head the agency, and he’ll likely move the agency back to where it was when it was born in 2010 under the Dodd-Frank Reform and Consumer Protection Act on Wall Street . During the Trump administration, the CFPB’s enforcement activities were greatly reduced and, for the most part, it ceased to draft and enact new regulations.

Chopra knows the CFPB well. He worked with Senator Elizabeth Warren on its creation. Prior to his appointment in 2018 as one of the five commissioners of the Federal Trade Commission, another major government agency with a consumer protection mandate, he was also its deputy director. CFPB observers expect Chopra to focus on issues related to student loans, credit reports, privacy, fair living, payday loans, and other issues that are regularly on the wish list of consumer protection advocates. Chopra is also expected to lead the CFPB to impose more aggressive sanctions on malefactors. During his time at the FTC, he rejected settlements that he felt were too weak for consumer scoffers.

Although the Trump administration rejected the burners for CFPB enforcement, the agency has not been entirely idle and it is always interesting to see what fraudulent and consumer harmful activity the CFPB has uncovered. For example, the CFPB and the states of Virginia, Massachusetts and New York sued a company called Libre in February for allegedly running a scam that prosecuted non-English speakers in immigration and customs detention centers who were waiting for the police (very slow) resolution of their immigration cases. Libre signed its victims of expensive English-only contracts related to ICE bonding requirements, deceptively claiming that it was helping to meet those requirements. To encourage payment of the contract amounts, Libre would face deportation as a sanction for non-payment.

In January, the CFPB announced the settlement of a lawsuit against LendUp Loans, an Oakland, California-based company that marketed expensive online loan products to service members.

In the lawsuit, the CFPB alleged that LendUp violated the Military Lending Act, including its annual percentage cap of 36% on the interest rate. As part of the settlement, LendUp pays consumers $ 300,000 in redress and a civil fine of $ 950,000 – and promises to clean up its act.

In December, the CFPB settled a case against Discover Bank and an affiliate, The Student Loan Corp.. These companies have violated a prior agreement and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act, an important federal law regulating electronic withdrawals from bank accounts, in connection with their activities to service personal student loan debts. As punishment for their sins, companies pay consumers “at least” $ 10 million in reparation and an additional $ 25 million in civil fines.

Oakland A’s reportedly should not have any obtainable cash free of charge company

OAKLAND, CA – JUNE 3: Managing Partner John Fisher, President David Kaval, Assistant General Manager, Pro Scouting & Player Staff Dan Feinstein, General Manager David Forst and Special Assistant to General Manager Chris Pittaro from Oakland Athletics talk in the Athletics Design Room on the opening day of the 2019 MLB Draft at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on June 3, 2019 in Oakland, California. Everyone knew the Oakland A’s would scrape the bottom of the barrel when it came to free hand. Even at the best of times, they don’t usually spend in the market, preferring to take advantage of their prospects or bet on less expensive players. This is how the A’s work.

This is not the best time. The A’s bottom-of-the-barrel approach would take to new levels this off-season due to the financial crisis. As it turned out, no one knew how far the A’s had to go as they reportedly had no money to spend.

I know that I’m out of step now. The A’s do not make a one-year contract for seminars as part of the QO. This is not a good sign of the direction the franchise is headed. You told agents they didn’t have any money. I think they really don’t, considering how important Semien is to the team / community.

It only got worse for the Oakland A’s

This lack of funding explains the A’s behavior during this off-season. Her greatest moves were trading for Nik turkey and to be active in draft rule V. While Oakland was linked to a few players, nothing more happened.

This also explains their strange behavior when it comes to their own free agents. Liam Hendriks hardly heard from the A’s, received messages of congratulations on his awards, but nothing related to a contract offer. The A’s also stated what they wanted Tommy La Stella and Marcus Seeds back, but there were never any rumors of contract offers.

A’s lack of financial resources is not a good sign for the coming season. In theory, this should be when the team revolves around its young core and does everything it can to win a championship for as long as it can. Instead, their inability to spend at all could result in a wasted year on the organization.

At some point the A’s have to bring in someone. With ten free agents in this off-season, they cannot fill up the roster exclusively from their farm system. Even if the A sign multiple players on smaller league contracts, they need to build their depth.

The problem is whether or not they can even afford it. The Oakland A’s are reportedly strapped for cash in the worst possible way.
